Phoenix, AZ - August, 2009 - The Hispanic Women's Conference, the largest conference in the country focused on the needs of Latina professionals, is pleased to announce a special workshop of defensive driving for the new millennium. "Today defensive driving is not just about keeping your hands at the ten and two o'clock positions and checking your mirrors-- it's important for young drivers to know the risks associated with cell phones and texting when they're on the road," says Maria Reyes, Chair of the 2009 Hispanic Women's Conference.
"We know this is a relevant topic and are pleased to know that our efforts are part of growing efforts around the country to make sure that all drivers are aware of potential distractions when they get behind the wheel," said Hispanic Women's Corporation CEO, Linda Mazon Gutierrez.
Earlier this month the Obama administration's Transportation Department Secretary Ray LaHood announced that it will hold a summit about the potential dangers of texting while driving. The summit is scheduled for next month and will include transportation officials, safety advocates, law-enforcement officers and members of Congress, an agency spokeswoman said.
There is a growing concern across the United States about drivers being distracted while using cell phones, BlackBerrys and other hand-held devices to call or send text messages.
Locally, the Hispanic Women's Conference will feature a safe driving workshop entitled, Distracted Driving: No LOL Matter, as part of its two-day conference. The Hispanic Women's Conference 2009, Rising to Service and Change, takes place Oct 1-2 at the downtown Phoenix Convention Center (South Building). The workshop, sponsored by Ford Motor Company aims at reducing distractions on the road and highlighting the dangers of distracted driving. |

Manejar Distraída No Es Asunto de RAC
La Conferencia para la Mujer Hispana, la conferencia más grande en el país con enfoque en las necesidades de la latina profesional se complace en anunciar un taller especial para manejo a la defensiva para el nuevo milenio. "Hoy, el manejar a la defensiva no es simplemente llevar las manos puestas en las 10 y 2, y mantenerse pendientes de los espejos - es imprescindible que los conductores jóvenes conozcan los riesgos asociados con teléfonos celulares y enviar mensajes al andar en camino," dice María Reyes, Presidente de la Conferencia Nacional de la Mujer Hispana del 2009.
"Sabemos que ésta es un tema de relevancia y nos complace saber que nuestro esfuerzo se une al aumento de actividades a través del país para asegurar que todo conductor esté consciente de distracciones potenciales cuando están al volante," dijo la CEO de la Asociación para la Mujer Hispana, Linda Mazón Gutiérrez.
A principios de este mes, el miembro de la administración de Obama, Secretario del Departamento de Transportación, Ray LaHood, anunció que se celebrará una cumbre acerca de los peligros potenciales al mensajear al conducir. La cumbre está programado para el mes entrante e incluirá a oficiales de transportación, defensores de la seguridad, agentes del orden público, y a miembros del Congreso, dijo una portavoz de la agencia.
Hay una creciente preocupación en los Estados Unidos porque los conductores están distraídos al usar sus teléfonos celulares, sus Blackberrys, y demás dispositivos de mano para llamar o enviar mensajes de texto.
A nivel local, la Conferencia para la Mujer Hispana ofrecerá un taller para conducir sin riesgos que se llama, Manejar Distraída: No Es Asunto de RAC, como parte de su conferencia de dos días, Poder de la Latina: Ascenso al Servicio y el Cambio que tomará lugar el 1º y 2º de octubre en el Edificio Sur del Centro de Convenciones de Phoenix, en el centro de la ciudad. El taller, patrocinado por Ford Motor Company, tiene como objetivo reducir las distracciones en los caminos y enfatizar el peligro de conducir distraído. |
