Greetings!

Several members of the Montgomery County Council have introduced a resolution asking Congress to cut military spending and fund our local communities. This is an extremely important resolution, and we need your help!  We ask you to contact members of the County Council in support of this resolution.
Background

As you know, our extraordinarily high level of military spending is bleeding our country dry. Meanwhile, our local communities--including Montgomery County--are cutting back on the services we need, like libraries, schools, public health, and infrastructure improvements. We want our federally-elected officials to redirect our tax money from warfare and militarism back to our community.

It is important for local leaders, such as our County Council, to take a stand in opposition to the nation's skewed priorities.

The resolution introduced Tues., Oct. 4, in the County Council is terrific--and we want it to pass. This resolution is so strong that the right-wing Examiner (free press edition) mocked it on Tuesday's front page!  We anticipate that Council members who have cosponsored this resolution will start to get a lot of push-back from the military-industrial complex.

This is when we need to show our power, to demonstrate that we, the people, still have a voice. Let's be louder than the war profiteers and their friends in the media!

What You Can Do

Please call, write and/or e-mail the County Council right away.

When you contact Council members, thank those who are cosponsoring the resolution and tell them to stay strong in support of it. Urge those who have not cosponsored the resolution to vote for it on Oct. 11. The list below identifies who has either cosponsored or publicly stated support for the resolution.

If you can, please contact all at-large Council members, as well as your representative. If you do not know who your Council representative is, click here to find out. Here's how to contact Council members:
  • For e-mail:  Use our link and we will print copies of your e-letter and present it to the Council at the hearing on Oct. 11. Alternatively, click here for individual e-mail addresses of all Council members.
  • For phone calls: See below for a list of Council members and their numbers. A personal phone call is very powerful! Please call! Your message can be either "Thank you for your support of the resolution to fund our communities by bringing home the war dollars," or "I urge you to support the resolution to fund our communities by bringing home the war dollars."
  • For snail-mail letters: Address your letters to 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville 20850.
We are thrilled that Council members have introduced this resolution, one that we have advocated for several months. Because of our geographic location, many members of Congress will likely learn of this. And since Rep. Chris Van Hollen is on the Super Committee, it is particularly important that he hear such a message from the County Council now. We hope it will embolden him to support serious cuts to military spending, while protecting the social safety network.

Can you help us achieve this important victory? Please take a few minutes now to contact the County Council!  We hope you will both call and send an e-mail!

In peace and solidarity,

Peace Action Montgomery

P.S.  Want to do more? We need letters to the editor of the Examiner, pointing out how skewed their "reporting" is. Send your letter to letters@washingtonexaminer.com and include your name, phone number, and city. Try to keep your letter to 150 words. To refute the "jobs argument," check out this study.  Here's the Examiner article.
