Peace Action Montgomery
Dear Friend for Peace,

Maybe you think that significant Pentagon cuts are a part of the debt bill, and that at least there's something we can like about this dreadful "compromise."

Wrong.

Read our blog piece that describes what happens with bloated military spending under this outrageous bill. Bottom line:  The maximum real cut to Pentagon spending that is even remotely possible under this bill is less than 1%.   Don't believe any hype you read that military spending, aka "defense" spending, will be cut.  Like so much else that you may have read about the so-called "debt crisis," this is a lie.

Meanwhile, Social Security, Medicare, health care for children, cancer research, national parks, environmental protection, and infrastructure repairs are down the tubes. No jobs on the horizon.  The filthy rich get richer and the military industrial complex stronger.

We have been deeply betrayed.

But we are fighting back! And we need you, if we are to win our struggle for justice and decency and a world in which conflict is resolved without war.

Join Our New Movement! Participate in our Town Hall!!

The Maryland coalition Fund Our Communities, Bring the War Dollars Home has grown to 47 organizations, and we are planning Town Halls around the state beginning in September, focused on the budget, how it affects us, and what we can do about it. The Montgomery County Town Hall will be Tuesday, September 20, 7:30 p.m. at the new Silver Spring Civic Center. Plan to be there--put it in your calendar now!

We'll have four speakers to rev us up and get us moving so that we can turn back the right wing tide that has taken over Washington and swamped this country. Our amazing group of speakers consists of Rep. Donna Edwards, State Senator Roger Manno, eminent economist Heather Boushey, and dynamic activist/analyst Karen Dolan.

Plan to be there, and be sure to invite all your friends, neighbors, family--everyone you know! We'll provide additional details later.

In peace and solidarity,

Adrienne, Alex, Dave, Fran, Jean, Karen, Larry, Mel, Melinda,  Mike, Nik, Pam, Pat, Shelley, Steve, Sue, Tim

Today's Quote

Wake me up, God; ignite my passion, fill me with outrage. Remind me that I am responsible for your world. Don't allow me to stand idly by. Inspire me to act. Teach me to believe I can repair some corner of the world.

Peace Demands Action
TO DO THIS WEEK

While the Senate is almost certain to pass the debt bill today, it is not too late to call Senators Mikulski and Cardin and tell them to vote NO on the terrible budget deal!

Obama can invoke the 14th amendment and prevent default. But with this bill, we have defaulted on all our national obligations, for the next generation.

Tell Cardin and Mikulski what you think of this.

Call now: the Congressional switchboard number is 202-224-3121.
