Did you see that the deficit committee co-chairs, Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, propose cutting the military budget by $100 billion? That's not nearly enough, given how bloated U.S. military spending is, but at least such spending cuts are now officially "on the table."
Let's parse their proposal and identify the good, the bad and the ugly, and then see what our next steps must be.
The Good
A few sacred military-industrial cows are in the crosshairs. A proposed $20 billion cut in new weapons systems would be the biggest since the end of the Cold War. In addition, Simpson and Bowles would close one-third of the 1,000 U.S. overseas bases.
The Bad
The report makes no mention of savings to be gained from cuts to the nuclear weapons complex or to unneeded aircraft fighter wings, submarines, or destroyers. And, the authors get to their $100 billion number by gesturing toward large quantities of unspecified "efficiencies."
The Ugly
Erskine and Bowles want to cut Social Security cost of living increases and raise the retirement age when they admit that Social Security does not contribute to the deficit. They want to cut the corporate tax rate and top income tax rate from 35% to 25%, when tax cuts for the rich, along with the huge increases in the military budget, dug most of the deficit hole we are in.
What Now?
If we were to cut military spending to an amount required only for real defense and move the money saved to our communities, we could eliminate the education deficit, the infrastructure deficit, and the jobs deficit. And we could meet our moral commitment for addressing the physical and mental health needs of our veterans.
It's up to us to help frame this debate about how to rescue our economy, and moving money from destructive to constructive purposes is the solution.
Here's what we're doing: - Forming a state-wide coalition of organizations that support a dramatic reduction in military spending.
- Lobbying members of the Maryland General Assembly to pass a resolution in support of reductions to the military budget.
- Asking other political bodies to pass their own resolutions.
- Speaking to all kinds of groups, large and small--for example, we made a presentation to the staff of CASA de Maryland last week.
But we need your help! Here's what you can do:
- Invite any organization to which you belong to join the Fund Our Communities coalition. It can be a neighborhood group, a religious congregation, a service or advocacy group, a union--we are striving for diversity! Here's the joining statement.
- Contact your representatives in Annapolis and ask them to speak out. They are the "grass tops," and grass tops have an important role to play if we are to change the dialogue. Find your representatives here.
- Invite us to speak to a group to which you belong about the Fund Our Communities campaign.
We'll be testifying at the Montgomery County Priorities Hearing on Thursday night, asking our General Assembly delegation to speak out on the need for new national priorities. It's an open meeting, and we'd love your support! Details in the calendar.
And, as always, we hope you will decide to join our efforts in a committed manner, by coming to our meetings and taking on tasks--there is so much work to be done.
In peace,
Jean, Pat, Pam, Alex, Dave, Nik, Steve, Tim, Bahram, Karen, Melinda, Fran, Josh, Mike, Shelley
P.S. Wondering about our subject line? "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is the title of a famous 1960s "spaghetti western" starring Clint Eastwood!

Afghanistan Update |
Our government is announcing that the U.S. will be in Afghanistan until at least 2014. The idea that we'd start leaving in 2011 is now shown to have been a cynical political ploy all along.
The stimulus package for Afghanistan continues unabated, while the money we need at home can't be found. We're building roads in Afghanistan, constructing three massive embassy compounds on the scale of the one in Baghdad, and still handing out millions of dollars in "payments" to appease warlords in the Afghan government.
And the level of violence we've unleashed is so great that even Karzai suggested this week that we scale it back--a suggestion that was met with outrage by Petraeus.
Read the new piece by Tom Englehardt, "War to the Horizon," that perfectly reflects our outrage and despair about this never-ending war.
And then consider joining us in a veteran-led protest at the White House on Dec. 16. E-mail us if you would like to join our group there or if you'd like more information.
You might also like to sign the petition to President Obama, expressing your outrage about this unending war.
