PeaceAction Montgomery
Dear Friend for Peace,
If you are a Peace Action one-minute-activist, we thank you!

Because of your help, we generated over 700 e-mails to Annapolis in support of our legislation to prohibit the use of a key military test, the ASVAB, in high schools for the purpose of recruitment.

The bill has now passed both the House of Delegates and the Senate! As soon as it is signed by the governor, it will become law. Maryland will be the first state in the nation to be able to protect student privacy from military recruiters, and we plan to share what we have learned in working to pass this bill with other states.  Read more below.

Thank you so much for your advocacy!

A War Profiteer Boondoggle

Did you read recently of the cost overruns for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a Lockheed Martin project?

The cost has more than doubled since the contract was initiated.  If the cost doesn't increase again--and it likely will--the total cost of the planes the Pentagon wants to buy will be $323 billion. That is, this one weapons system will cost almost one-third of what the health care plan is expected to cost over a decade.

I'm sure you were riveted on the lengthy debates in Congress and the massive media coverage of this extraordinarily expensive weapons system, weren't you?  And did you see all the tea party demonstrations claiming our country will be bankrupted by this huge expenditure--for a cold war-era weapon that we don't even need?

Help us develop a Maryland constituency to reduce military spending and reinvest our tax money in our own communities, where it is needed.

Invite us to your community group to show our slides on the costs of militarism. And then, let's organize!

In peace,
Jean, Pat, Steve, Pam, Fran, Nik, Dave, Mike, Tim, Alex, Josh and Bahram

ASVABMaryland Legislation Update

Legislation to Protect Student Privacy Passes

The Maryland General Assembly has passed the bill that will protect the privacy of students who take a vocational aptitude test administered by the military in Maryland's public high schools. The legislation prevents the automatic release to military recruiters of three hours worth of test results and other private information gathered in conjunction with the test -- such as social security number, ethnicity, demographics, and career plans.

By a commanding vote in the House of Delegates and a close vote in the Senate, Maryland legislators agreed with Peace Action Montgomery and our partners in this campaign -- the Maryland ACLU, Progressive Maryland, the NAACP Maryland Conference, and the Maryland PTA -- that all Maryland schools in which the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is given must select a certain results-release option that stipulates that the results may not be forwarded to military recruiters. Until now, automatic release -- without parental consent or knowledge -- was the common practice. With this bill, only the student and his or her parents may decide to share this information with recruiters.

We will be honoring Delegate Sheila Hixson and Senator Jamie Raskin, the introducers of the bill in their respective chambers, at our annual luncheon May 8th in Rockville--see the calendar for details. Be sure to come!

Legislation to Ensure Legal Use of the MD National Guard Defeated in House of Delegates

HB 1037 to require the governor to request that any Federally deployed National Guard troops be returned to the control of the State if the legal authorization for their use has expired or is otherwise no longer legal failed in committee, we are sorry to report. Thus, the legislation is dead for this year.

Peace Demands Action
TO DO THIS WEEK

AIPAC lobbyists in Washington are urging Congress to pressure President Obama not to insist on a freeze in the expansion of Israeli settlements.

Please e-mail your Congressional representatives and urge them to support peace, not AIPAC.

Here's what Donna Edwards said on the floor of the House in support of H. Con. Res. 248, calling for a timetable to end the war in Afghanistan:

"This Congress has an obligation to send a strong message to the White House that the war must come to an end. Who are we fighting? Over the course of time this war and its mission and its goals have morphed and morphed and morphed."

Please call Rep. Edwards and thank her for her stand--and call Maryland's other representatives to express your disappointment that they refuse to support an end to the war in Afghanistan.
