Our annual Party in the Park is a major celebration, a beautiful tradition, and an important fundraiser for RIS. Yet the Party is not the only place to experience this wonderful community. In planning the Party and working to make it successful, we enjoy great company and share great laughs. Please come! To get a flavor of the Party and 2012 volunteer opportunities, click here for our new video produced by Erin Clemens.
Our first All Hands Meeting will be held at the Wyckoffs' home on Thursday, May 17. Gathering and dessert at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting at 7:00. This is a chance for small groups to work independently, then come together to share progress and connect goals. Individuals also can learn more about how to support the auction and raffle, and get the word out. For more information and to register, please click here. |

RIS Holds Stakeholder Dialogue
As Rein in Sarcoma enters our 2nd decade, planning for future sustainability has become a priority. On Sunday, April 15th, Lisa Griebel (Team leader -Transition Work Group, Board Member and Sarcoma Survivor) led 45 people (representing 4 key stakeholder groups: Patients/Survivors, Family/Family Funds, Doctors/Researchers and Other RIS supporters) through a 3-hour structured dialogue process.

"It Takes Teamwork to Make the Dream Work!"So begins a moving call to action written by our new auction chair, Michele Erwin. Michele lost her dear friend Eric Skogman to sarcoma cancer, and she invites you to join her in volunteering so that you too may give back, make a difference and benefit yourself.
The first auction volunteer team meeting will take place in May soon after the May 17th "All Hands" meeting. Many talents are needed, from high-tech whizzes, to creative arrangers, to dedicated solicitors, to go-phers who will transport goods. As a Rein-in-Sarcoma Scholar, I had the privilege of being part of this year's Rein-in-Sarcoma (RIS) lecture which targets second year medical students about to start their clinical rotations. Actually, this year was special because I unintentionally got to help and participate in two separate lectures.
Traditionally, the RIS lecture is given by a physician and provides information about the clinical signs and symptoms of sarcoma. The goal of the lecture is not only to bolster student interest in the various specialties that treat sarcoma, but also enlighten future physicians (regardless of specialty) about the common symptoms of sarcoma, leading to more timely diagnoses and optimizing outcomes for sarcoma patients. Each of us has a story to tell about your sarcoma journey. If you would like to share this with others as to way to share, be of help to others, or to memorialize a loved one, we encourage you to do so.
Sarcoma Stories are firsthand accounts from sarcoma patients, survivors and loved ones who are honoring the lives of deceased sarcoma patients. As a sarcoma survivor or patient you can be a source of inspiration, education and hope for a newly diagnosed sarcoma patient. You may have faced sarcoma as a child, like Julie pictured here or as a teenager or adult. You can easily write and place your story on our website or, from the same information, develop a storyboard to be displayed at Sarcoma Corner at our July 23rd, "Party in the Park". To learn how and read other stories, click here. |
As you may have noticed, RIS and the Party work best when you join in! If you can't attend the meetings, you can still sign up to join a planning team. We're already planning for the night of the Party, too. More than 200 volunteers are expected, with most shifts running 1.5 to 2 hours. We'd love to sign you up. Please click here to see a form filled with fun options. You may fill it out and submit it right from this link.

(Reuters) - A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended GlaxoSmithKline Plc's Votrient for soft-tissue sarcoma on Tuesday, but did not recommend a treatment for the same malady developed jointly by Merck & Co Inc and Ariad Pharmaceuticals Inc.The FDA committee of outside experts voted 11-2 in finding that Votrient's ability to improve short-term survival without worsening symptoms in patients who receive chemotherapy outweighed adverse risks and a lack of evidence that it can extend overall survival.
