Ogilvie - 2012
Christian Ogilvie:  Embracing Education

University of Minnesota Associate Professor and orthopaedic surgeon Christian Ogilvie chose medicine so he could practice science, while working directly with people.  He likes teaching people, educating patients, and he likes to fix things.  He appreciates the chance to make a big difference in someone's life, in a moment and to restore them, perhaps, to what they could do before.

A recent recruit to Minnesota, Dr. Ogilvie has been a great asset for RIS.  He has embraced our education mission:  teaching residents about sarcomas, speaking to medical students through the Wyckoff Scholar program, appearing at the Mini-Medical School.  Dr. Ogilvie also has joined our Red Flags Campaign and now, our Board.  To read more about our newest partner, click here.

Stories are what connect our lives. We all have stories to tell.  On Sunday, January 29th we came together at Bachman's Heritage room to share our stories through a special presentation by  the Hippocrates Cafe, sponsored by Ruth and Dale Bachman.

"Expressions of Cancer" was created by Dr. Jon Hallberg, who moderated thoughtful and moving performances by actors Matt Sciple and Katherine Ferrand, and by Jacqueline Ultan on cello and Simone Perrin using voice and accordian.  We experienced cancer from many perspectives, including patients, doctors, and loved ones. Mud Dogs 2010 Despite the shimmer of brown grass and temperatures closer to end of March norms than early February, the Mud Dogs will "push on regardless" in their quest to keep the spirit of snowmobiling Eric Skogman alive. Pat Bougeois, speaking for the 2012 Mud Dogs said: "The new snowless 40-mile ride will be traversed using old-school leaf spring snowmobiles that have certainly seen "better days". No matter, our cause is just and our resolve unwavering."  The 2012 Mud Dog Riders now ask that your determination to help bring awareness and find a cure for Sarcoma is of equal vigor.

Eric Skogman This year's ride honors the life of Eric Skogman, who began this event and raised over $20,000 in its first three years!  Eric died from Liposarcoma in April 2011.  The 2012 ride is dedicated to his vision, passion, humor, and memory. All donations up to $1,500 will be matched by a generous anonymous RIS donor!

Our website and the RIS Facebook page will keep you updated on the the Ride. Pledge and learn more more...

MN Resources
Monthly Resources
To help connect sarcoma patients and their loved ones with resources available to them in the Upper Midwest and around the country, we are now featuring cancer/sarcoma resources that may be of help to you.  Please let us know of resources that you may wish to share with others!
  •  Minnesota Cancer Resources- A comprehensive website providing cancer resources of particular interest for those living in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest.
  • Wish Fulfillment Organizations -  These organizations provide chronically or seriously ill children and their families the opportunity to have a dream come true. Wishes usually fall into one of three categories: trips, celebrity meetings or a special item. Most organizations listed grant wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 18, but others are designed for adults.
The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation is the primary sarcoma cancer foundation in the upper Midwest. Our goals are to fund research that may find a cure for sarcoma cancers, to provide education for medical personnel and the public, and to support patients and their loved ones.  We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, which allows over 96% of our revenues to directly support our mission!

Sincerely,

Peter Wyckoff, President
