Exciting New Research? Let's Try It!
Could you ever imagine sarcoma cancer, with a fairy tale ending? University of Minnesota Professor and cancer geneticist Dr. David Largaespada is working hard to make this happen. Through creative collaboration with others at the University and supported in part by RIS, Dr. Largaespada seeks both to better understand how cancer grows in people and to find new ways to stop it. He is drawn to sarcoma in part because it affects young people, and also because it is understudied.
There are "more ideas than ever" being tried against the more common cancers. Dr. Largaespada would like to try these ideas against sarcoma cancer, as well. He expects to see "exciting new research in the near future." To learn more about these possibilities, click here.

U of M Holds Sarcoma Day On December 9, the University of Minnesota held its second annual Sarcoma Day, educating medical students about this too-often misdiagnosed disease. Coordinated by Wyckoff Scholars Brian Febbo and Maura Scanlon, presented by Dr. Christian Ogilvie, this day strikes at the heart of RIS' mission. Dr. Ogilvie presented a lecture entitled "Soft Tissue Tumors: Do's and Don'ts & What Are They in the First Place?" for a group of second and third year students. See pictures and read more, here.

RIS Gathering - Sunday, January 23
RIS Gatherings are offered for sarcoma patients and survivors, for their families, and for those who have lost someone to sarcoma. On Sunday January 23 at 1:30 pm, Ruth and Dale Bachman again will host an RIS gathering in the gorgeous space at the Lyndale Avenue Bachman's store. At 2:00, we will be entertained by "excruciatingly funny" comedian Bill Arnold, sure to make us laugh. Then we will be privileged to hear from Ruth herself, who will share the strength and grace that helped her thrive, even after losing part of her arm to sarcoma cancer.
This food for the soul will be supplemented, of course, with physical food. The treats will include home baked cakes made by Jasmine Baultrippe, an outstanding cake designer who is the daughter of RIS Board member Theresa Baultrippe. Please join us!! To learn more about Ruth, Bill or the event; and to register, you may click here. |
Volunteer Needs
On Saturday, February 19, RIS needs you to help staff a table at the Twin Cities Volunteer Expo at the Mall of America. Shifts are two hours, running from 9 am - 4 pm. Please contact Nancy Hendrickson if you will be there! Learn more and Email Nancy. |
Inspiration...
Inhale the crisp, bracing air. Straighten your spine at the shock of it.
And smile.

Mini Medical School All who donated at least $100 to RIS in 2010 will be invited to join University of Minnesota doctors to learn about sarcoma on Saturday, February 5, 2011. This day provides abundant fun and laughter, which is a really nice irony given the cells encased on those pathology slides. Your life has been touched by sarcoma. Why not see its face? Learn to sew? To read the report from last year's day, click here. |
Thank You! On Tuesday, November 16, you donated $3,900 to RIS for Minnesota's Give to the Max Day. The Elinda Bates Wing fund made a generous match of $3,000. We appreciate your support. Here's to the future! |

The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation is the primary sarcoma cancer foundation in the upper Midwest. Our goals are to fund research that may find a cure for sarcoma cancers, to provide education for medical personnel and the public, and to support patients and their loved ones. We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, which allows over 97% of our revenues to directly support our mission!
Sincerely,
Peter Wyckoff, President Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation |
