RIS SETS $154,000 NEW RESEARCH GRANT ROUND
The Rein in Sarcoma Board of Directors at its September meeting
authorized a new funding round for Sarcoma cancer research at the
University of Minnesota Sarcoma Cancer Center of $154,000. This is the
largest grant round in the Foundation's history.
The ability of Rein in Sarcoma to authorize this extraordinary
grant round is a direct result highly of successful Rein in Sarcoma
2009 held last July, plus major fundraisers initiated by many
individuals and families in support and Rein in Sarcoma, and major
contributions from newly formed RIS Tribute and Memorial Funds (see
article below).
With this authorization competitive proposals from throughout the
University will be sought during the coming weeks in from many facets
of sarcoma cancer research. The Board's current time line calls for
final determination of which proposals to be funded in February 2010. RIS
is also pleased to announce that the 2009 All University Sarcoma cancer
Translational Award was given to
Dr. Daniel A Saltzman's for his studies of attenuated salmonella with
IL-2 against unresectable malignancies. This is a $50,000 grant award
which is funded in collaboration with the Children's Cancer Fund and
the Roby Thompson Endowment. For more information about RIS research funding, click here.

ALLAN SWARTZ TO CHAIR RIS 2010
When Allan
Swartz a one year sarcoma survivor came to last February's RIS
Gathering, he was so taken by the event and the organization that he
vowed to "pay it forward" by personally committing to supporting Rein
in Sarcoma.
Allan proved to be a "man of his word". In the next months he
volunteered for three RIS 2009 committees, secured the events 2009
emcee, and with Connie Dow sold over $2,000 of raffle tickets! All the
while thoroughly enjoying himself.
This fall he accepted the Board's invitation to to Chair Rein in
Sarcoma 2010 that is now scheduled to be held Monday evening, July
28th at Cafesjian's Carousel and the Como Park Visitor Center and
grounds. He has immediately begun his tenure by working with key
volunteers to to put together next year's event leadership team, and to
secure 2010 corporate and media sponsors.
Lisa Griebel,
who has chaired the last two years RIS "Party in the Park" Events and
is a three year Sarcoma survivor, said Allan has shown himself "in a
very short time to be an extraordinary, talented and committed leader
who will take our event to even greater heights." Find our more... |

"It took a village to get me through cancer. My village rose up from
all quarters, embroidered itself together into these crazy beautiful
patterns, and mysteriously provided exactly the grace I needed at just
the right moments. Some threads were slender, or appeared only briefly;
others were richly interwoven at every step. All were appreciated deeply. I write, first, to thank you for being.
I write also to highlight the Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma
Foundation, grown from tragedy transformed, as so often happens into
beauty."
So writes Christin Jaye Eaton Garcia, a poet, mother, wife, lawyer, and sarcoma survivor. In her memoir "Pulse, My Cancer Journey,", Christin presents this memoir as a rare gift to all sarcoma patients and survivors. Part reflections, part poetry, part memoir and part a faith journey, click here to read and learn more.
