Dan's Auto Center

Classic Quality - Latest Technology
 July 2010
Greetings!

Summertime!  Is it finally here to stay?  I love having more daylight hours to enjoy outdoor activities, backyard barbecues, picnics, boating, hiking, swimming...and pedal pushers.  Say what?   No, not those short pants from days gone by....pedal pushers of a different type.

Here is the latest in the automotive world:  we are getting throttle pedals that push back when we drive too aggressively, seriously!  The goal of these subtle reminders is to increase fuel economy.  Or I guess you can use it for a little workout.  Infiniti offers such a system in the new M sedan.  Fortunately, there is an override button.

Continental has developed a system to help you out in accident avoidance situations.  The approach is to apply more back pressure on the throttle if there is someone following you too closely.  This system can also vibrate the throttle to warn you.  Continental says the goal is to get the driver to slow down when someone is following too closely.  I don't know about you, but I am usually fully aware when someone is on my tail.  And, if I do slow down, the person behind me is likely to express his or her displeasure by giving me the "California welcome" when he or she passes me.  I like the idea of a flame blast out the tail pipe as a better solution to tailgating.  I wonder if Dan can make one for me.

Enjoy!

Dan wants to know...

if a person rides a bike and drives a car, would they walk this vehicle?

if a politician owns this, would he or she be a "shoe-in"?

if someone brought this in to our shop for an alignment, could he do a "toe adjustment"?

if this vehicle breaks down, can it be "towed"?

if this vehicle can kick some hiney?

is this the vehicle builder's biggest "feat"?

Dan also said that he wouldn't be caught dead in it.  I wouldn't mind taking it for a stroll.  Bet'cha I'd get more looks in it than I ever did in a pair of high heels!

Now You Know - from Dan

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees.

The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.

Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead insisted that he come out to the parking lot to their car.  They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.  The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed.

Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldbergs' name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours, and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown.

And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show
Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max on the controls.

So, now you know...

One more groaner:
A jumper cable walks into a bar, and looks around aggressively at the other customers.  The barman says, "All right, I'll serve you...
but don't start anything."

Just one more:
Did you hear the one about the man who dreamed he was a muffler on a car, and then that he was part of the wheel?
He woke up exhausted and tired.

V-8 and V-12 Engines in Miniature
Minature Engine
For all you out there who like big, honkin' V-8's and screamin' V-12 engines, check out this tiny version that you could run on your workbench or kitchen table.

Models like these are built by craftsmen the same way the big ones are made by machining billet stock and castings, but in miniature. These are not just models that look like engines, they are real, running engines.

One of the more popular model V-8 engines over the years has been the Challenger (pictured above). This one was built by Ron Colonna. Casting kits are still available for this 1/3 scale engine through Cole's Power Models.

For more miniature engines check out The Internet Craftsmanship Museum.  Many more images can be found elsewhere on the Web, and engines like these can be seen in person at model engineering shows around the country.
Auto Trivia Answers
1)  Ask a car enthusiast and most of the time you'll get a blank look, a shrug of the shoulders and maybe a guess along the lines of "What a horse can do!".   HowStuffWorks
 has more information on horsepower.

 2)  Dan's '57 Chevy. For more of the story go to Dan's '57 Chevy fan page on Facebook.

1971 Ford Pinto3)  A 1971 Ford Pinto. Dan helped Sally chose just the right car when she was in College.
Dan still is helping people make wise prepurchasing decisions with inspections of preowned vehicles.  If you are considering the purchase of a used car, why not have Dan take a peak under the hood and take it for a spin.  The fee that he will charge is minor if it keeps you from buying
a lemon.

4)  The Honda Accord holds that distinction, being manufactured in Ohio in 1982 rather than being shipped to the States from overseas.
What people are saying about Dan's

The Best "I've been going to Dan's for a very long time. I wouldn't take my vehicles anywhere else and feel as safe as they make me feel. The prices are higher than others but the quality and customer service is worth it. "  From TheYellowPages.com

"On a trip up to Yosemite, I had to stop here to have some emergency car care. Dan and Sally were extraordinarily helpful, and they had my car fixed that afternoon. Not only did I feel I could trust Dan, but he meticulously went over all the tests and repairs he performed, along with giving me advice about other problems I'd soon want to have looked at. I only wish Dan's Auto Center were in Fresno. Dan would be my regular mechanic if it were!"  John B - Fresno   From yelp.com

And a wise old "Sage" told us recently, "You're not inexpensive, but you sure are good!".  His comment reminded me of the sign we have hanging in our office, maybe you've seen it.  It reads: "The Bitterness of poor quality remains long after the Sweetness of a low price is forgotten".
