Dear Friends:
We are so grateful to this community for coming together to support the Campaign for Shelter. Together we've made the dream of a new facility to serve the needs of those most in need a reality. Please drive down Hudson and see the progress on the new building. We hope to move in mid October and we are so near to completing our goal. We have only $350K left to raise! The Campaign for Shelter has forever changed my experience of what a community can make possible. Thank you for all of your support. Please continue to be engaged with our work as we share with you the outcomes of your generosity. The results are made measurable by the difference we make in the lives of the people we serve."

"Light the Night" Helps to Close Out the Capital Campaign
Seated left to Right: Brian Roberts, GM of The Chop House Annapolis, Elizabeth Kinney, President of the Light House shelter Board of Directors, Lauren Maddox, Annapolis, Marsha Gill, Event Chair. On May 13th the Light House, in conjunction with generous support from The Chop House restaurant, hosted its first "Light the Night" dinner to support Light House's Campaign for Shelter. Proceeds benefited the construction of our new facility and helped close the gap of our capital campaign with just $350,000 left to raise!
The night started at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by dinner and wine at 7:30 p.m. Guests were treated to a Fashion Show featuring the latest clothing from Anthropologie, Brooks Brothers, Lululemon Athletica, and Talbots. Community leaders, Bess Langbein, Executive Director of Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County, Amy Chase, Community Liaison for Whole Foods Market Annapolis, and Lisa Hillman, Sr. VP and Chief Development Officer of Anne Arundel Medical Center, shared remarks on their involvement with the Shelter.
This event would not have been possible without the generous support of The Chop House General Manager, Brian Roberts, and his staff. We are also extremely grateful to Phil Gibbs, President of Hamel Builders, who matched the evening's proceeds allowing us to raise a total of $28,000! |

Livingston Fire Protection
Jay Livingston, founder and Chairman of Livingston Fire Protection of Hyattsville, MD went to a "friendraiser" in the fall of 2008 to learn about Light House shelter's plans to build a new facility. Moved by the growing need for emergency shelter, Jay immediately offered to help.
Jay and Livingston Fire Protection President Richard Kozel generously offered to donate and install the new building's fire protection system, valued at $75,000. This gift in-kind had a double benefit of helping Light House to win several highly competitive grants, including $1,200,000 from the State of Maryland and $575,000 from the Kresge Foundation. Livingston Fire Protection was onsite at the new building these last few weeks, installing sprinklers. The Light House shelter's board, staff, and current and future clients express profound gratitude to Jay Livingston, Richard Kozel and the employees of Livingston Fire Protection for their generous support. Despite a tough economy, they are committed to giving back to this community. |

A Warm Welcome Awaits Future Shelter Residents
It's been said that "many hands make light work." That was how Leanne Tirpak and her Quilt Committee managed to inspire people from throughout the Annapolis area and as far away as New Jersey to create 55 home-made twin-sized quilts and several baby quilts for the new Light House shelter. The Quilt Committee set a goal to have a hand-made quilt to cover each of the 70 beds in the new facility. School groups, churches, quilt guilds, veteran quilters and novices all banded together to produce colorful quilts, each with its own theme and history. The quilts will be on display at the Grand Opening events planned for this fall to celebrate the new Light House's grand opening. If you'd like to help make a quilt or find out more, please email Leanne Tirpak at or check out our blog!

Grade School Philanthropist Fundraises for the Light House
Zayne Liberatore is proof that philanthropy has no age barrier. When his 3rd grade class at Shady Side Elementary was given the assignment to write a fundraising letter for a charity, Zayne chose the Light House. He researched the new Light House: A Homeless Prevention Support Center on the web and decided to donated $1 to the cause. Zayne went a step further and challenged his classmates to do the same. With the help of his mother, Pam, Zayne hopes to extend his classroom challenge to all area grade schools. Thank you to Zayne and his "Campayne"!

The Light House would like to thank the community for its incredible response to our plea for pantry items. We are thrilled to report that the pantry is once again well stocked. Thank you to all who formed neighborhood food drives and to the families and individuals who made extra efforts to offer food contributions. Meeting the basic needs of our homeless neighbors is just as important during these hot summers months. Thank you for making it possible for the Light House to continue its work year round! |
