October Brings Winterizations

AutumnSchool's back in session, the early mornings are starting to feel like fall and soon the leaves will be changing colors.  And in late September, you'll be receiving a reminder in the mail from us letting you know that it's time to schedule your winterizations.

If you haven't winterized with us before, let us explain a bit about the process:
  • We give all of our customers the opportunity to winterize prior to October 15th, in an attempt to beat the first freeze of the season. Occasionally, we get a freeze prior to the 15th, but many years it's mid to late October before the first freeze.
  • In order to accommodate as many of our customers as possible, each customer is provided with two winterization dates in October, based on your zip code.
  • Your September mailing will list the two October dates, one in the first half of the month and a second date in the second half of the month.
  • In most cases, you do not need to be home when we winterize your sprinklers as long as you can turn off the water on the inside of your home that "feeds" the sprinklers.  We'll provide you with detailed instructions in our mailing and on our website.
  • If you have special circumstances, we do our best to work with your schedule.
  • While we do have some dates available in November, we recommend that you winterize by the end of October unless you have an insulated backflow cover.

Ensure your Back Flow Device is Protected from an Early Freeze

If the weather forecasters predict an early freeze, it's important to protect your backflow device from freezing temps.  Here's how you can do that:
  1. Wrap the backflow and copper pipe (they come out of your house and go into the ground) with something bulky like old blankets or towels.
  2. Keep it dry by covering the wrapping with a plastic garbage bag or tarp.

Insulated back flow coverNature's Helper also offers an insulated backflow cover to protect against freeze damage.  We will be installing these covers throughout the last two weeks of September, so call us today or click here to request your appointment, and we'll get you on the schedule.

These re-useable covers also come in handy in the early spring when you want to start your sprinklers to water- in fertilizer, but night-time temps are still occasionally dipping below freezing.  Backflow repairs start at $110 so at just $79 installed, these covers are a smart investment.
