"Don't Sweat the Petty Things, and Don't Pet the Sweaty Things" -- George Carlin

Recently, I asked a friend who said he was riding his first Rocketts Landing Cap2Cap on May 12, if he was going to be sporting spandex.  "Of course.  I'm a proud MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra)", he said.  He laughed about trying to get in shape for the ride, and how he may need to flag down one of the support vans to bring him the last few miles.  Another rider admitted his wife is going to do the SyCom Century while he rides in the Sands Anderson Half, "to save the cost of an ambulance ride".

In last year's mass starts, we saw some impressive high-end machines ridden by some seriously  fit athletes.  But we also saw bikes held together with duct tape, and outfits better suited for sitting on a barcalounger.  We heard self-deprecating weight jokes, gender jokes, grumpy old guy jokes, bohappy ridersdy part jokes and a lot of cyclist jokes. ("A rabbi, a priest and a cyclist walk into a bar...").  As is the case every year, we came away knowing that we have a hilarious group of people joining us on ride day. (If you think the riders are funny, you should hear the volunteers.)

If you're on the fence about trying your first Cap2Cap, remember it is supposed to be fun.  Riding a long way is hard, but it doesn't mean you can't thoroughly enjoy, and possibly laugh your way through the experience.   It is a ride and not a race, so the atmosphehappy ridingre is friendly, supportive and relaxed.  Some say the Cap2Cap is totally chill

We invite you to join the frivolity, and bring your own sense of humor. Yuck it up with the MAMILs and the sweaty things, and see if you end up having the time of your life.

Hope to see you on May 12,
Beth Weisbrod

Thank you to Meg Turner and The James River Garden Club for two beautiful cobblestone planters adorning the Virginia Capital Trail at Shiplock Park. Two years ago, Meg approached the VCTF about a project along the Trail.  She patiently persisted while working through designs and approvals to build these gorgeous planters.

Thanks to Larry Miller, Mary Lois Mitchum, Nathan Burrell and Rocky Edwards of the Richmond Department of Parks and Recreation, and Steve Sadler, of the Department of Public Works.  Not onlyPlanter at Shiplock Park are the stone planters eye-catching, they emphasize the history of the Park--cobblestones were used as ballast by ships anchoring nearby--and blend beautifully with the surrounding area.

Cayce Craddock, of Craddock Masonry, and his masons hand-picked the cobbles at Byrd Park, with the help of Rocky Edwards, and constructed the planters on site.

The VCTF continues the Shiplock Park facelift with a trailhead project currently underway that will include a shade structure, informational kiosk, benches, bike racks and other amenities.  We will keep you posted on the progress!
