For you who are VCTF supporters, but have yet to ride in your first Cap2Cap, why not? We would love to have you! This has grown into a great community event on both ends of the ride, and is so much more than a cycling fundraiser. It's a social event, an eating experience, a play group, a reunion, a networking bonanza, a beauty contest (not) and a huge mood enhancer. Rarely is anyone cranky at these things, except for last year's Richmond century riders who pedaled into a brutal headwind the last 50 miles. (A little Buz and Neds BBQ and a visit to the beer truck perked them right up.)
Maybe you're afraid people will laugh at your I AM NOT A CYCLIST outfit? Serious? Have you seen what cyclists wear? With an easy and flat 25-mile route, on which you can average 3.5 mph and still make it back before we turn out the lights, you can't say it's too hard. We might recommend a little training if maintaining such a pace leaves you winded, but our friends at Endorphin Fitness can take care of you there. Bill Agee can also get you onto a sweet new rig if the reason you ride just fast enough to not fall over is that your brakes have rusted to the sides of your tires.
The bottom line is that it's a lot of fun, no matter your skill level or experience. We'll have volunteers to encourage you along the way, give you food, drinks, and hugs if you're not too sweaty, and high five you when you're done. Worst case? You realize you need spandex shorts next year because there's a reason, unrelated to fashion, that everyone wears them to ride. Best case? You wish you hadn't taken this long to discover that riding your bike in the Cap2Cap makes you feel this good.
Hope to see you on May 7,
Beth
