Crum, Jr., Executive Director of the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission will be discussing priorities on improving the quality of life in Richmond. Let's all go and suggest bike and pedestrian facilities be Priority One. When: Wed, Oct. 20, 7-8:30 pm. Where: Richmond Times-Dispatch, 300 East. Franklin St., Richmond, Va. 23219 For more info: email Robin Beres at: mberes@timesdispatch.com********************************************* Don't let the Varina phase become a shoulder of the road. Send in your letters today. Make sure to mention you want a separate and safe trail. ******************************************** Found this (very well put!) testimonial on our facebook page: From fan Tryna Bailey Fitzpatrick: I think Williamsburg might be one of the best bike riding towns in the U.S. I did 20 miles this morning on the gorgeous Va Capital Trail which took me through the very path walked by John Smith and Pocahontas - along tree covered roads and historical battlefields, through Jamestown, over wooden bridges and marshlands, past Colonial homes (circa 1608), by horse fields and farmlands. What a treasure !! ****************************************** The Lighter Side

Kids, Go Play in Traffic! I like this picture because it's from the Virginia Capital Trail, showing one of the main reasons why separate, multi-use trails are so good for an area. They are a safe place for parents and kids to play. They're also safe for bird watching, hiking, reading historical markers, and walking the dog, among other leisurely outdoor activites we reserve for places free from cars.
The Varina section of the Virginia Capital Trail, roughly ten miles long, may end up on the shoulder of Rt. 5, with no physical separation from cars cruisng along at 55 mph. Henrico county officials think this is the best solution for handling future growth of the Rt. 5 corridor. We disagree, and consider this a significant threat to the Trail as a whole. If you live in Varina and want a separate and safe place to walk, push a stroller, commute to school and work by bike, go for a run and other healthly outdoor activities, you stand to lose the most. Everyone in the region stands to lose a world-class amenity, which would bring increased tourism and property values, more vitality to the community, a healthy way to open up the rich history along Rt. 5, among a multitude of other benefits.
The Rt. 5 corridor study is scheduled to go on for at least 12 more months, and is touted as being a collaborative effort, with many hearings for public input. We'll keep you posted on opportunities for your voice to be heard. Until then, click the link to the left to find your legislator. We urge you to send a note--letters tend to make more of an impact than emails--letting them know you support the Virginia Capital Trail as a separate and safe trail. A Varina couple who attended one of our recent receptions said they would move to Williamsburg if the Trail ended up on Rt. 5. A few more of these would get the attention of an elected official or two.
Let's not let the original vision of the Trail, with its potential to elevate our region into a world-class destination, be compromised. With sixteen separate and safe miles already completed, we know what what a gem we could have.

Thank you to our Sponsors and Supporters!
| Big Success With Evening Receptions The VCTF sends a sincere thank you to the sponsors of our two September fundraising receptions. These events were tremendously successful because of their generosity.
Balliceaux and The Williamsburg Winery both provided beautiful venues at a cost that made it doable for us. Thom Suddeth and his Carytown Bicycle Company and Road Runner Running Store gave $500 as did BikeBeat and Virginia Ventures. Thank you to our biggest reception sponsors! See the list below for everyone else whose contributions were part of our success.
And thank you to everyone who came out and supported us! (By the way, if you paid with cash and did not leave your name, please email us so we can properly thank you!) Each reception drew over one hundred attendees, and everyone enjoyed meeting fellow supporters and Foundation staff and board members. If you missed them, stay tuned. We will be having many more, since they've become so popular. If you're interested in hosting such an event, feel free to contact us at: info@virginiacapitaltrail.org.
