Did you know bicycle and pedestrian facilities are significant attractions for tourists?
- A 2004 study of the North Carolina Northern Outer Banks indicates, "A conservative estimate of the annual economic impact of bicyclists is $60 million."(NCSU Institute for Transportation Research and Education)
- "In the last 12 months, we've had more tourists than in the last 30 years." (Rockmart, Ga. Mayor Curtis Lewis speaking of the Silver Comet Trail, 2002)
- In Damascus, Virginia--population 1,066--visitors of the Virginia Creeper and Appalachian trails spent $1.59 million annually. More astoundingly, there are six bike shops from where a visitor to the Virginia Creeper Trail can rent a bicycle. (Trails and Economic Development, August 2007, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy)
Trails throughout the country report similar tourism results. Our Trail has the potential to become the same significant attraction for our entire region. Thank you to everyone supporting the project and supporting the work of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation. You're making a sound investment.
