Letter from the Executive Director

Things are cooking--the flowers, the grass, the kids, the dog.  Everything is hot.  As are things at the VCTF, in a good way.  Now that the record-breaking Cap2Cap is behind us, we have turned our attention to our ongoing work enhancing and promoting the completion of the trail.

The Richmond trailhead facility at Shiplock Park is currently under preliminary design.
Like we did on the the Jamestown end, we'll be building a shade structure with benches, bike racks and landscaping.  We'll be using Mason Hearn of HomeMasons for the design, and of course, the facility will feature the very popular electronic information kiosk, brought to you by a generous grant from Dominion.  The Trail users in  Jamestown, especially the tourists, love using it to find out what to see and do along the eight miles of trail there.  Picture history and science books, 411, Google maps, and YouTube, all in an ATM.

If this sounds exciting, it is.  The trail continues to progress towards its world class potential through the support of local businesses (big and small) and generous individuals.  We need to continue cultivating broad support to get to the next level.  With such a popular, healthy, sporty, environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing, vital, ideally located, historically rich and widely embraced project, I know we'll get there.  Wouldn't you like to be a part of it?

Say What?
Did you know that multi-use trails have been linked to property value increases of 25% and higher in cities just like ours?  Or that Portland, Oregon attributes $63 million in economic activity to their network of urban bike and pedestrian trails?

The VCTF continues to seek opportunities to educate the public and our leaders about the tremendous potential the Virginia Capital Trail holds for our region, through presentations to civic organizations, advocacy groups, schools, government agencies and local employers.

Awareness and education is the key to progress!

Speaking of Which...
You are invited to join us at a public input meeting addressing the Rt. 5 corridor in eastern Henrico County.  This corridor includes a significant portion of the Virginia Capital Trail, so showing support in a big way is important.
