							  Spotlight on our
Volunteers

and Ted Moreland

 Meet The
Teds

Ted Hanson and Ted Moreland are two extraordinary volunteers.
Avid cyclists and active members of the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists,
both Teds devote much of their time to sharing their enthusiasm for
riding bikes with the Williamsburg community through local events.
Luckily for the VCTF, they also are very committed to the Virginia
Capital Trail, and generously give time and money to the Foundation.  In
fact, both are taking on a pioneering role in helping to set up the
first Friends of the Virginia Capital Trail organization in James City
County.  Besides meeting with Foundation staff, these two are busy
defining jobs and recruiting volunteers.  Once the structure is set and
goals are met, we plan to model the Charles City, Henrico County and
Richmond Friends' organizations after this one.
  Among other things, the
Teds are collaborating on a trail usage study with Michael Luchs, a
marketing professor at the William and Mary Mason School of Business,
who is using this project--designing
 the survey and
compiling the data--as
part of his class work.  Thank you Professor Luchs!
  The
Foundation needs this information for everything from providing the
Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation with reports on parking usage at the
Settlement, to using the data for fundraising, and promotional and
advocacy efforts.  Knowing how and why people use the trail, where they
are from, and how they get there are among the details we hope to learn
and keep track of over time.  This data is what we plan to focus on as
we move forward touting the benefits of multiuse trails in our area. Knowing the Teds are in charge, we're confident success is at hand.
  If
you are interested in helping with this project or volunteering for
something else in the organization, email:
info@virginiacapitaltrail.org and we'll forward your interest to Ted
 and Ted!

Anoth er fun, intense, exhausting, thrilling,
fulfilling day of supporting the
cause through (sort of) serious cycling and volunteering is behind us.
  Once again, riders
turned out in record numbers:  1,600 participants registered for the 2010 event!  That's an 11% increase over last year's
numbers, with the 50-mile ride growing the most.  We think that means lots of first time riders, which means good
things for the future of the ride.   The Foundation also netted just
over $45,000, to be used for upcoming projects like a Richmond trailhead
facility, signs in Charles City County, advocacy work in areas where new
phases are being built, and continued promotion and community outreach.  Thank you everyone for
 supporting our work!
Save the date: May 14, 2011 for the 2011 ride
Photos from both starting venues and beyond are available for purchase:

  Friends of the Virginia Capital
Trail?
  Help us name
our volunteer organization.  Trails all over the country have a "Friends
of" group supporting everything from maintenance needs to ongoing
improvements.  Because we think the Virginia Capital Trail is special,
we'd like to have a unique name for this group of dedicated volunteers.
(Plus, the acronym F.O.C.T. has some obvious issues.)  Submit your
suggestions to either our Facebook page or send an email to: info@virginiacapitaltrail.org
  The winner receives a
free personalized brick, just like First Lady Maureen McDonnell's, at
the Trailhead of their choice! (Jamestown, Charles City or Richmond)

 Cap2Cap Volunteer
 Raffle
  Carla Adams, happy volunteer on
the Rocketts side won the awesome Trek Bike.  Lynn Miller from
Williamsburg won the REI gift card.  Thank you to our hardworking
volunteers and to Trek and REI!

Post Ride Survey How did we do? Thank you to everyone who filled out a
survey.  Over 95% of you thought we did a great job and said you would
recommend the Cap2Cap to a friend.  Fear not, we know better than to
assume we nailed it.  We have many ideas on how to do even better in
2011.
From our Inbox This, from Bob Ornelaz, repeat Cap2Cap rider: As always, the rest
stops were staffed with charming and enthusiastic volunteers, and
stocked with much-needed refreshments.  We finished around 2:30pm and
enjoyed a delicious and hearty meal from Buz & Ned's.  Thank you and
your staff very much, for all the visible and behind-the-scenes hard
work you do in putting together this event!
Awwww, thank you Bob!  Glad you and your
friends had a great day.  We had lots of great volunteers, especially from RABA and WAB.  Big thanks to our cycling clubs!
