Campaign Update

Chairing a United Way Campaign

"It was a great honor for me to serve as Chair to the United Way of Saginaw County campaign. I was proud to work with the United Way staff, who were very organized, effective and efficient. Our community is fortunate to have such a skilled staff managing the organization. Also, I was grateful for the people and businesses that contributed to the campaign - what a tremendous response we received from this community! Their generous support and commitment made me feel good about United Way and its purpose, and what people are doing. Finally, the organizations that are served by United Way to help fill the needs of this community. So much good is being done. When you add this all up, it is such a rewarding experience. I am thankful that I could be a small part of the campaign." ~John Kunitzer, 2011 Campaign Chair.

We cannot thank John enough for all his hard work and dedication to our campaign and our community! It will be hard work following in the footsteps of John and our past campaign chairs, but we are certain that Jeff Martin from The Dow Chemical Company will do a great job. Also, it was announced at our Annual Meeting that Craig Goslin from the Saginaw Spirit will serve as Campaign Vice-Chair this year and then become the Campaign Chair for our 2013 campaign.

Thank you for your service

Dr. Craig Douglas
Dr. Craig Douglas

At our Annual Meeting we presented plaques to two dedicated board members who have served United Way in multiple capacities over many years, Dr. Craig Douglas and Garnet Sherman.

As she reflected back on her years served with United Way of Saginaw County, here is what board member and past board secretary, Garnet Sherman, shared with us:

How did you first decide to become involved with United Way? I first became involved with United Garnet ShermanWay with our firm's (Gardey Financial Advisors, LLC) annual campaign. My employer, Kim Gardey, has been a supporter of United Way for many, many years. He has made an annual campaign a priority for our firm.

What is one thing that you learned or will always remember from your experience serving with United Way? I've learned about the level of accountability that United Way expects from the agencies that receive funding. With that accountability aspect, I can be assured that my contributions are being well used. Also, one of the most enriching aspects of serving on the board is being inspired by the others on the board whose goal it is to take care of our community.

We would also like to thank Tom Begin for his service as 2010-2012 Board Chair. In addition to his role as Board Chair, Tom has served United Way of Saginaw County in many capacities for more than 15 years. We thank Tom for his leadership and dedication to the community.

"Never lose sight of the fact that everything you do, every moment you allocate for United Way, betters our community. The impact made by United Way helps someone, and that someone could be a complete stranger, a neighbor or someone that you love. It is a huge responsibility and a tremendous honor to be in a position to make a difference of this magnitude in our community." ~Tom Begin

Getting to Know You

5 Minutes with a UWSC New Staff Member

Name: Kimberly German

Title:
Administrative Assistant - Campaign

How did you first become involved with United Way?

I originally became involved with United Way as a donor. Then six years later, I took a position working for United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. I have been passionate about United Way and the work that the organization does ever since.

Where did you grow up? Sault Ste. Marie

As someone who is new to Saginaw County what excites you most about this community? Saginaw is quite different then Sault St. Marie but I am really looking forward to becoming part of a bigger community and the opportunities that the larger community has to offer.

Pets: I have two cats - Roscoe and Maggie

Interests: Music, pets, football, the outdoors and spending time with my friends and family

Favorite United Way Event/Program: Although I have only been here a few weeks, the staff all seem very excited for the Annual Golf Classic. I think that it will be fun to work with and have the chance to meet a professional athlete.

Sharing a Success Story...

Submitted by Theresa, AmeriCorps Member

"This is the end of my first six months serving for AmeriCorps. This program has impacted me in a major way. I often find myself preaching to others about drugs and their harmful effects, outside of my services. This is something I would have never done in the past. I am learning so much! Serving for AmeriCorps gives me the extra push I need to make changes in me and all around me every chance I get!

Serving for AmeriCorps has made me realize that my true passion in life is to help other people in any way that I can. Making a difference in my community makes me feel good inside. Encouraging others to be drug free is such an important issue to deal with because I know people who use drugs on a regular basis. I will continue to work hard in my community in hopes that I will impact others the way AmeriCorps has impacted me.
