Students Spring Into Service

On Thursday, May 12, volunteers young and old worked together to complete projects at six Emmaus House homes and at Hartley Nature Center. There were more than 150 high school students, representing 14 Saginaw County high school student groups, working along with 61 community volunteers. The volunteers worked hard planting, painting, raking, landscaping, making minor home repairs and doing whatever else was asked of them.

A big thank you to all who participated to make this another successful service day! Also, thank you so much to all the sponsors and community partners who helped make this day and several other days possible!

Below are a few pictures from the event or you can view all the pictures on our website - UnitedWaySaginaw.org

Program Spotlight - VITA Program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

Individuals and families who cannot afford to pay to have their taxes prepared can visit one of our several VITA sites between late January and April 15 and have a fully trained volunteer prepare their taxes for free.

During the 2010 tax year, 63 Saginaw County VITA volunteers spent more than 3,300 hours helping 2,830 clients and together completed more than 5,296 returns.

In total, more than $3 million was brought back to the Saginaw County community through the work of these dedicated volunteers and the United Way of Saginaw County VITA program.

Recently the VITA volunteers were honored at a luncheon for their dedication and commitment to the community.

Two volunteers, Dorothy Webster and Janet Roekle, have been with the VITA program for 27 years. Seven volunteers, Carolyn Cardinal, Eve Hirsch, Tim Slezak, Jackie Ward, Barbara Witkowski, Nancy Baumgartner and Lillie Grandberry, have all given more than 10 years of service.

The VITA program continuously helps thousands of families each year through the support of the volunteers and strong community partners. The program's goal is to increase the amount brought back to the community and organizers hope to achieve this by increasing participation and awareness.
