A Letter from the Dominican Republic
April 15, 2011
Dear People of Hope New York,
Today, I want you to know (as the word implies)
that hope is what we have in this community of "United Hands" of Canete Tenares.
Since the center was finished last year, thanks to your help, we now have plenty of fresh water. People in our community come every day to get their daily water supply from the center water tank system.
Every Saturday, people gather at the Community Center to share a meal and for prayers. Also, we have arts and crafts workshops every week. Our handmade rosaries, embroidered tablecloths and hair accessories are a source of income for about five poor families in our community.
We are starting to book retreats for the summer season. This will help us get funds to help the poor and the elderly of our community.
This summer, we have a new initiative, a summer camp for children ages 5-12 whom have never had this opportunity before. This initiative is sponsored by the New York church community also.
Lots of blessings for all of you at Hope. Thanks
Again for your generosity.
Truly Yours,
Yessenia Alvarez,
Administrator of United Hands in Canete Tenares

A LETTER FROM THE DILLON'S
Dear Gerry,
Just a quick word to congratulate you and all the members of HOPe who put on the fabulous concert this past Saturday evening. Your choice of SEAN O'SHEA as the headliner was inspired. Kudos also to the musicians who backed him up, as well as the step dancers and set dancers who performed. Bridie and I were entertained the entire evening.
The Newsletter that Loretta and yourself send out each month is second to none, befitting the organization that HOPe Charities is! One addition to it that you might consider, to help get the word out about what projects HOPe is involved in , is a prominently displayed link to the HOPe website. It tells the HOPe story as well as it could be told.
Once again, congrats on a job well done.
Regards, Bridie and Phil Dillon
Note: Following the Dillons' recommendation, in addition to the links to the website throughout the newsletter, we are including a prominently displayed link to the website at the top of the newsletter. Thanks, Bridie and Phil! |

HOPe ABOUT TOWN |
A few months ago, we highlighted a trip that Billy O'Sullivan, Paul Greene and Brendan O'Flynn took to Costa Rica to evaluate the progress at La Carpio. As a result of that trip and the obvious need for assistance to repair a retaining wall, HOPe has donated $10,000. for the much needed repairs. The wall has been repaired & pictures will be posted in the coming weeks on our website.
The Traditional Irish Concert which took place last Saturday, April 30th at Kerry Hall was a resounding success! Various talented artists, led by Sean O'Shea who was accompanied by Margie Mulvihill, John Reynolds and John Walsh, donated their time, talents and expenses to a wonderful evening of music, comedy and dance. We are so grateful to our friends who entertained and our friends who came to the event and supported us! You are the Best!
For a limited time, the well-known landscape artist, Edmund Sullivan, known for his beautiful Irish landscapes, is offering his work at a 25% discount to HOPe members. With each purchase, HOPe will receive a contribution of approximately 30% of the sale price. Please take advantage of this fabulous offer! For more information, you can contact Loretta King at lking@likingmarketing.com. To see Edmund's work, please visit www.edmundsullivan.com.
And talking about celebrations, Dr Lopez will be appointing a committee to celebrate appropriately HOPe's ten years of service and growth. She welcomes any suggestions as to how best to mark the ten years since we had our first meeting in the Kerry Hall in Yonkers if you would like to attend.
As mentioned previously, HOPe now accepts Paypal donations at its homepage at www.hope-charity.org. We are an IRS 501(C) (3) status which allows you to take a tax deduction for your donation. We hope that people worldwide will take advantage of this convenient method and help us help the very poorest of the poor.
