As mentioned in the June newsletter, at the recent AGM meeting, Tenille Defreitas and Siobhan Kennedy, (daughter of Tom and Eileen Kennedy), closed the meeting with a thoughtful presentation of the work they are committed to in Africa, namely locating water and digging wells for people in remote villages. For those of us in the US, it is difficult to imagine the reality of life without easily accessible water. For example, the young children whose job it is to walk for miles to get their family water, face danger daily from predators. Without running water, the food supply is unsafe. Without effective hygiene, many children refuse to go to school on a regular basis. Having fresh, accessible, local water has such a positive impact on village life, it is difficult for us in the US to imagine.
Tennille and Siobhan inspired us with their descriptions of locating the source of the water and then overseeing the excavation to make the concept a reality. They described obstacles they have overcome in their efforts to succeed. These young women are role models for us all in what a few dedicated people can do and how you CAN make a difference. It was a lesson we could all benefit from. For more information on their work, visit their website at EPIC.
UPDATE: At the most recent HOPe meeting, members voted to contribute $15,000.00 to a well in Weru, Tanzania through EPIC. The project will start in 2 months. |

HOPe approved, at the September meeting, a $20,000.00 gift to the Alma Mater Hospital in Gros Morne (Gonaives), Haiti, to finish a residence for visiting volunteer doctors and medical staff.
The house had been financed by a private family foundation, a German parish and the Knights of Malta. The additional funds were needed to have plumbing and electricity installed as well as flooring and windows. When finished, the house will be able to accomodate twelve medical personnel to this area still reeling from the January 12th earthquake and its effects on the area.
The Alma Mater Hospital is a 50 bed hospital which is the only 24 hour health facility for a community of 135,000 residents. It provides basic medical and dental services for adults and children, including maternity care, pre- and post-natal care and limited surgical services. |

Blessings, Elba (Vice President of HOPe),
I have been working on our project. The little school is almost finished. We are going to have the water installation soon, and we even have money left over to built a small kitchen.
I am very happy for everything that we have been able to accomplish. May God and the Virgin Mary protect all HOPe members for helping the poorest of the poorest. I will send HOPe some photos soon.

Dear Elba (VP of HOPe),
Here, the work is very strenuous; but we continue with our work with great joy.
Yesterday, a man came to see me. He is a nice person, his daughter is registered in our kindergarten class, he asked me the following question, "Sister, I would like to know the secret of your happiness. Everytime that I see you, I discovered an inner happiness in you.I am happy, because I have a wife and five children; but I want to have th๋ kind of happiness that you have."
I was moved and I responded: "That happiness comes from God."
Best regards,
Sister Rosa |
