| HOPe CHARITY THRIFT SHOP |
HOPe's Charity Thrift Shop began as a flea market in September 27, 2009. The purpose of this activity was to raise funds to support the organization's projects in other countries. While running the flea market, HOPe's members realized that there was a need in the community for a store that would sell articles of clothing and household items at very low prices. There was space available at 301 McLean Avenue.
Tom Kennedy took the lead in remodeling the place to make it a store. He donated time, money, materials and construction workers and in no time the store took shape. Billy O'Sullivan donated money to purchase shelves and other materials. Eileen Kennedy has been the thrift shop manager. She never did a thrift shop before so she did not know how to run the shop; but for a person without experience she has done a great job! Along with her, all the volunteers have been learning by trial and error. On opening day, the place look so bright, beautiful and the smell of new wood and materials attracted many customers that have remained loyal from its inception until now. Lately, we are attracting a large number of customers from diverse backgrounds. At the shop, we have the opportunity to reach out to the community and to learn about their language, culture and their needs. People who purchase clothes, furniture and other items not only get a bargain; but their funds help poor people in their country of origin. Their hard earned dollars help needy people in Peru, Costa Rica, Honduras and other countries. Eileen and her volunteers accept and sort out donations, set up displays and work with customers. It has been a labor of love and has helped HOPe members to work as a team for a common cause. Eileen and Sally work very hard on displays and use every inch of available space to display the clothes and other items. They take donated clothes home to wash and press and occasionally to the cleaners. The shop is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The prices are very reasonable. Day laborers come to the store looking for working boots, coats and other clothing. They tell us that "the store is a blessing to them because they cannot afford to pay regular store prices." This validates HOPe's mission to help the poorest of the poor in other countries as well as people in our own backyard. On behalf of Eileen Kennedy, we thank all the volunteers and donors that have contributed to make HOPe's Charity Thrift Shop a success

| HOPE IN PERU |
Hello Elba:
As soon as I received the money, I rushed to the store, to purchase educational materials for the school. I bought books for the children, chairs, tables, pencils, crayons, notebooks, etc. I know that when they will come to school on Monday they will be extremely happy. Mafer, the little girl that I found roaming the streets, is very sick with tuberculosis, parasites and suffering from a skin condition, too. This year, I had her baptized and her little brothers also. Since she was left alone on the streets; I decided to let her stay with me during the day. Her mother had no one to mind the little girl, while she works as a brick layer. There are so many predators in the street; that I feared that Mafer could get hurt or even abused. Here, she eats with us; we bathe her and dress her with beautiful clothes. That is why she looks so pretty in the pictures that I had sent you in my previous e-mail.
After class, I let her take a nap until her mother comes from work. There are so many children in need of tender love and care; and I do as much as I can for them. Sometimes, I let the children from our school take a shower and they feel so happy and excited. For them taking a shower is like going to a party. They feel special. It takes so little to make them happy. Tomorrow, I will have a tough day working with the youth in my Parish. They designated me to be in charge of religious instruction for the entire Parish and there are more than 40 small chapels. I have to get them ready for their confirmation. Well, I have to keep on working. Please give my heartfelt thanks to HOPe on my behalf. We will keep our lines of communication open and I will report to the group about our progress regarding all our missionary work. I will send pictures too.
Until next time, with infinite gratitude,
Sister Rosa

HOPE ABOUT TOWN! |
The HOPe AGM, which was held in the Maryknoll Building in Ossining on May 1st, was well-attended and very successful. President, Joe McCarthy, stressed that we are making a real and positive impact on the lives of people in many parts of the Third World. He urged all the members to re-double their efforts, especially in the fundraising area, so that we can reach even more people in need. Thanks to the Maryknoll community for their hospitality and especially for the fine lunch they provided.
There was a big ovation at the AGM for outgoing secretary, Tom Keaveney. Tom has served the Association very well for six years as secretary, and he has also been our resident expert on the HOPe by-laws. Tome will continue as an active member whose wise counsel will always be respected. He will be replaced as secretary by Michael Pryce, another impressive and committed member. We are grateful to Sean Spratt, Dave Massey, Dermot Yorke and Michael Doherty for agreeing to donate part of the profit from the recent annual Carlow East golf outing to HOPe. These are great guys and we really appreciate their support for our projects. We are working with AFYA on filling the container for Casa Visitacion, the health clinic run by the Medical Missionary Sisters in Honduras. We hope that the container, which will mostly contain medical supplies, will be shipped within the next few weeks. We are glad to report that Mary O'Sullivan, one of our staunchest members, is well on the way to full recovery from her recent serious bout of pneumonia. She hopes to be back in her usual place, greeting people at the door, this Saturday, at the HOPe ceili in the Kerry Building. Our vice-president, Elba Lopez and her wonderful husband, Ephraim, welcomed Fr. Bill Senger, to their home last weekend. Fr. Bill is the Maryknoll priest who was pastor of the parish in Chamelecon, near San Pedro Sula, in Honduras, when the HOPe Building was constructed there six years ago. That HOPe Building continues to be widely used as an education and healthcare center. Pat Buckley, one of the founding members of HOPe, will miss the May ceili because he is visiting with his sister, Sr. Dominique Buckley, who is ill in England. We wish Sr. Dominique a speedy recovery. She will be in our thoughts and prayers. In Mr. Buckley's absence, Loretta King will be at the helm for this Saturday's ceili. Thank you, Loretta, for taking over the arrangements for the night. |
