HOPe In Peru!
Report from the Peru Project

Members of HOPe were impressed by Sr. Rosa from the first time we met her. And when four members of HOPe visited with her last year, they confirmed that she is indeed doing exceptional and inspired work with the poor in the slums of Huaycan, near Lima. The following are excerpts from a letter which we received from her a few weeks ago.

 Dear Elba,
...We are continuing with the school of music and the evening workshops for the older students, parents and other family memebers.  For example, we conduct a workshop on how to make soap, so that they sell the soap and make a living from it.

During the workshops, we teach cooking courses and we teach how to process soybeans to produce milk for children's nourishment.  Here, Sister Marilia teaches them how to make cheese and butter from soybean milk....We do not charge for these workshops.

... In the last few months, we have in our house, Mafer, a four year old girl.  She is a very pretty girl and she is at risk.  She was homeless, roaming the streets, infected with louses, parasites and undernourished; now she is recovering.

We are just a drop in the ocean but it is important to be this drop and it is the only thing that I want to be from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for listening.
                                                                      A hug,

                                                                     Sister Rosa
HOPe in Haiti!
We mentioned last month about shipping a 40 ft. container to Haiti. Well, we have revised our plans because it is very difficult to transport a container to anywhere in the area of Port-au-Prince. The roads are in terrible condition and storage is also a major problem because most of the buildings have been severely damaged by the earthquake. So, we are holding off for now, but we sent another cheque for almost $7000 to the Sisters who are dealing with the devastation every day. This money was contributed to HOPe for our relief program in Haiti. We intend to continue our involvement with the struggling people of that  suffering country

* Congratulations to Pat Buckley on his retirement!  Now, he can save all his energy for the dance floor!

*  Mary O'Sullivan is still recovering at home where she is receiving therapy a few times a week. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope that she will be back soon at her table at the HOPe ceilis. Please keep Mary in your prayers.

* There are widespread reports that Tom Kennedy is training three times a week, preparing for the New York marathon in November. The word on the street is that he plans to join Sean O'Shea representing HOPe in that event. It should be quite a sight watching him after the first ten miles!

* The HOPe Thrift Shop fulfills needs on various levels.  It contributes to the local community as a place where local people can buy quality items at bargain prices, the profits we raise go directly to our projects, and its a way to clear your home of clutter.  However, Ephraim, who arranges the staffing schedules, needs more volunteers. Please consider helping us out with by committing some time to working in the Thrift Shop. Right now, a few people are doing most of the work. Ephraim's phone number is 718 931 3870.

* The HOPe Annual General Meeting will take place in the beautiful Maryknoll Building in Ossining on Saturday, May 1st, starting at 10.00am.
