HOPe in Honduras

Greetings from Honduras,

We hope this finds you and all at HOPe in good form. We are fine here, plenty of work and the Staff are taking a lot of responsibility now which is great for the growth and service of the program.  It has been difficult this past year, we have a new Government but not much has changed for in the lives of the poor.  We are gratefull to have been able to make a difference in a number of families especially the poor and marginalised.  At the same time the capacity building continued and despite many obstacles we are happy with the outcome of the year.  Of course, we would not be able to do this work without the help of all at HOPe, your generous support and continued interest inspires us to carry out our mission.  Attached is a copy of our annual report which gives you an idea of the activities of the past year.

Thank you too for sharing about all you are doing for the people of Haiti, it is wonderful work for such a tremendous need.  We have not heard anything about the container and imagine you have a lot to cope with now with your committment to Haiti.

Greetings to all our friends in HOPe and know you are remembered daily in our prayers.

                                                         With best wishes,
                                                         Ros and Renee.

HOPe In Haiti!

Dear Members of HOPe,Haiti

It is with deep gratitude I write to thank you, on behalf of the Haitian people, for your very generous donation of $10,000.00 in support of our Haitian brothers and sisters.  The scope and depth of the devastation from the earthquake in Haiti is beyond belief.  So many died; so many maimed, especially children!

Due to generous donors, we have been able to provide a number of services: food, water, medication, seeds, tarps, and tents for shelter, and transportation for both the living and the deceased.  As I write there are great efforts being made to arrange support groups for adults and children to deal with their many losses.  Crayons and colored paper have provided children with some utensils to help them give expression to their feelings and with the help of adults, some being our sisters, to verbalize their grief, anger, and concerns.  Workshops for women are also serving the same purpose.

There is so much to accomplish.  The schools in Port Au Prince are destroyed.  Many children have relocated to schools in rural areas, placing a strain on existing limited resources.  The Religious of Jesus and Mary are working very hard to assist the children with food, school supplies, and the funding of additional teacher salaries.  Your support helps immensely and we will be forever grateful.

Our long-range plans have not taken shape, yet.  We need to see what the Haitian government will decide for Port Au Prince and the country at large.  However, we continue day-to-day to support our Haitian brothers and sisters in small and varied ways and to receive from them the witness of a profound and vibrant faith.

Sincerely,

Sr. Janet Stolba, RJM

* The Annual HOPe Golf Classic will be held in the Rockland Country Club in Sparkhill on Monday, June 28th.This is our main fundraiser every year, so we hope that it will be well-supported again this year. The HOPe Director of Fundraising, Billy O'Sullivan, is chairman of the event. He can be reached to discuss sponsorship or to register to play at bill@accordcontracting.com

* A group of HOPe members met this month with Ashley Brady, a member who works in the marketing and PR areas in Manhattan. We had a very productive meeting exploring how we can reach a wider audience to attract new members and to let people know about the excellent work done in the projects that we fund.

* Inclement weather reduced the level of activity in the HOPe Thrift Shop this month. Ephraim, who arranges the staffing schedules, needs more volunteers. Please consider helping us out with by committing some time to working in the Thrift Shop. Right now, a few people are doing most of the work. Ephraim's phone number is 718 931 3870.

* Ashley Brady assures us that there will be a HOPe group marching in the AIDS walk in Manhattan on Sunday, May 16th. Let Ashley know if you plan to walk or if you would like to sponsor the HOPe walkers. Her phone number is 607 434 6655 and her email is Ashley@intencityglobal.com

 * President, Joe McCarthy and Gerry O'Shea are working  hard to fill a 40 ft container with  medical, school and re-construction supplies for the Sisters who are doing sterling work with the poor in Haiti. Thanks to Michael Diggins and Brendan O'Regan for their major help in getting construction supplies. Joe McCarthy was successful in getting some school supplies from Staples, but we need a lot more - we are talking here about basic stuff like pens, pencils and writing paper.

*  Last month we reported that Mary O'Sullivan was recovering in hospital from a bout of pneumonia. We are glad to report that she is home and improving slowly. She hopes to be back collecting the money at the door for the April ceili. We wish Mary a speedy and full recovery.

* The HOPe Annual General Meeting will take place in the beautiful Maryknoll Building in Ossining on Saturday, May 1st, starting at 10.00am.
