HOPe in Haiti

HaitiDear Colleagues,

At our recent monthly meeting, a motion was put forth, and unanimously approved, to send a 40 foot container to Haiti to help address the critical needs of the Haitian people. Prior to this motion, a Haiti update was provided to the members in attendance, and during the discussion part of the motion, a dynamic dialogue ensued, which resulted in a unanimous approval of the motion.

For those members who were unable to be at last night's (2/18/10) meeting and also for the benefit of our benefactors and supporters, I would like to share with you the details of this initiative and get your comments and input on it.

The cost to ship the 40 foot container, making use of Afya's expertise in this area, would be approximately $10,000. Afya has already shipped successfully 6 containers in the past month to Haiti. Please google AFYA to see what they have done already in response to the earthquake.

The cost, as indicated above, would be $10,000 for the 40 foot container. Presently, we have approximately $5600.00, specifically earmarked for Haiti relief from our members and other people who specifically sent us money, based on our  Haiti earthquake appeal. The land transportation from Port au Prince to Gran Morne is estimated to cost another $6000 - $8,000. Gran Morne is the area that Sister Pat Dillon and her colleagues are based.(approximately 100 miles from Port au Prince PAP). Numerous people have moved from the disaster in PAP to Gran Morne.

The rationale for attempting this initiative is, as one of our members said, a "no brainer!" In the 40 foot container, we would be shipping approximately $250,000 worth of medical and other supplies to Haiti. In short, we would be leveraging the $5600 we presntly have, and additional funds we would raise from other sources, to meet the $10,000 total we need for the container. However, the bonaza would be in terms of the medical supplies and other goods we would be able to ship totaling $250,000. A bonanza indeed! The medical supplies we would get from AFYA, whose sole purpose is providing medical and related supplies to hospitals and clinics in the Third World.

Just yesterday, I spoke to Sister Denise, a colleague of Sister Pat Dillon, who was injured in the earthquake and is now recovering in the United States. She gave me a riveting, compelling, emotional account of her experience there. She said that at this moment, there is a desperate need for wheelchairs, canes, crutches, medical supplies, etc.

This initiative is desperately needed, and I would ask for your support, comments, ideas and prayers to make it a success! Knowing the "Can Do Spirit" of the HOPe membership and our generous
supporters I am confident we can make this happen!

HOPe's Water Project in Kenya
Last month, HOPe donated $8000 for a water project in Kenya. We received the following letters in response to our donation.

Dear Members of HOPe:

Your generous contribution of $8000 will help us continue with the Kituiuni Water Project, which is now in its final phase of completion. Kenya has experienced many years of drought which has caused severe food shortages, and in the area where the HOPe money is being used, the situation is much worse than many other areas in Kenya because of over-population and much drier weather conditions.

The donation will help us in buying more PSV pipes which will be used in water distribution. When more money becomes available to build a second storage tank, then this water project will have reached its final stage. But even now the benefits of the Project are being partly realized because the water has already reached some communities.

It is the generosity of donors like you which enables us to initiate and sustain projects like the Water and Food Program. All of these programs are aimed at reducing poverty by empowering the poor to stand on their own feet and by giving children an opportunity to get an education so that they can provide for themselves and their families in the future.

So, on behalf of the beneficiaries of your benevolence, we thank you sincerely and ask you to consider supporting our work in the future. Your support means the world to those who have very little hope of rising above their  poverty-stricken existence.

                                                                   Sincerely,
                                                                   Executive Director,
                                                                   Kenya- USA Relief

Dear Eileen and Friends in HOPe,

Many thanks for the generous donation of $8000 from HOPe for the Kenya Water Project, which Maureen McCarthy and I recommended for your consideration. My friend, Veronica, who is very involved in fundraising for this Water Project, actually cried when I told her about the HOPe money.

I thank you sincerely for helping to bring water, which, in turn, brings food and life to our beloved poor.

God bless the work of HOPe.

HOPe Participates in May AIDS Walk
One of our young members, Ashley Brady (pictured on the right)
 a recent graduate
Ashley from Iona College, is leading a group of
HOPe walkers in the 10k  [6.2 miles] AIDS Walk in Manhattan on  Sunday May 16th. Our HOPe projects in Honduras and Ethiopia are directly involved with prevention programs and the treatment of those suffering with AIDS.  Our team name is HOPe Helping Other People, and our team number is 4964. Let Ashley know if you intend to walk or to sponsor the HOPe walkers. Her phone number is 607 434 6655 and her email is Ashley@intencityglobal.com

All the sponsorship money goes to HOPe.

We are very grateful to IntenCity, Ashley's employers, for supporting HOPe as their number one designated charity. IntenCity is a thriving marketing and PR firm which, in its various presentations to clients, disseminates information about HOPe and has made substantial contributions to our cause

* The Annual HOPe Fundraiser in Rosie O'Grady's in Manhattan will take place on  Tuesday April 13th, starting at 6.30pm. Please mark it on your calendar. There will be more information in the March newsletter. Siobhan O'Shea will again be chairing this event. She can be reached at 718 915 4632.

* Talking about Rosie O'Grady's, congratulations to the owner, Mike Carty, who is Guest of Honor at the prestigious GAA Banquet, which will be held in Antuns in Queens Village on Saturday, March 27th. Mike has been an outstanding supporter of HOPe, making his premises available for our Annual Fundraiser and providing a delicious meal for all those attending, at no cost whatsoever.

* The next HOPe ceili will be held in the Kerry Hall on Saturday, February 27th. Music will be by the effervescent Pete Kelly and his band. For further information, contact Pat Buckley at 718 325 5335.

* Mary O'Sullivan, a devoted member of HOPe and the "door lady" at all our ceilis, is recovering from a serious bout of pneumonia. She won't be at her post for the February ceili, but we wish Mary a quick and full recovery and we are confident that she will return for the March ceili on the 27th of that month.

* The HOPe Thrift Shop is now open on Fridays and is doing nicely according to Elba Lopez and Eileen Kennedy. We are grateful to Efraim Vazquez for taking care of the staffing schedules. He needs more volunteers so that no individual is asked to work there for unduly long periods. He can be reached at 718 931 3870. Quite a few customers are looking for First Communion dresses, so if you know anyone who has an "old" dress, perhaps they will  consider donating it to HOPe.

* We regret the death of Tom Galvin, a regular at HOPe ceilis over the last eight years. Many of our members attended the wake and funeral and sympathized with his wife and family. May he rest in peace.

* Our first HOPe brochure has been re-done by Siobhan and Gerry O'Shea. It provides a more up-to-date narrative about our organization which has grown a lot over the last decade. The new brochure is with the printer and should be available before the beginning of March.

*We are in the process of redesigning our website at www.hope-charity.org and it should be available within the next few weeks.  We hope to bring you up-to-date information about our projects, the thrift shop and events.   We will let you know when the new site is available and hope you take time to visit it.
Again, we sincerely thank you for your generous support!  Visit us at www.hope-charity.org
