| HAITI ALERT! |
In response to the tragedy occurring in Haiti, the HOPe organization is responding with a sizable donation to the crisis in that country. We are in touch with people on the ground in Haiti, having received a number of e-mails from them, describing the unbelievable devastation in that country. We are asking our membership to support this initiative and share this information with family and friends.

| HOPe in Ethiopia |
ETHIOPIA - An Ancient Land in Dire Need! Ethiopia is located in what is known as the Horn of Africa. It is one of the most ancient countries in the world and the second largest country in Africa. A population of close to 8o million people stretches the meager resources of this poor area. Unlike other countries in Africa, Ethiopia has been an independent nation, tracing its roots back to the 10th century B.C. Unfortunately, today it is one of the poorest countries on earth. The tragedy is compounded by the scourge of Aids. Three decades ago, this pandemic struck Ethiopia with a vengeance.
The preceding statement serves as a backdrop to our initiative now underway in Ethiopia. Three international organizations decided to join resources to assist this ancient land and its people, in particular the women and girls of Ethiopia. Aids Partnership in Africa (APA) based in Ireland, Comunita Voluntai per il Mondo, founded in Italy, and HOPe, our organization, joined together to address the problem of HIV/AIDS and its impact in the Amhara Region of North West Ethiopia. This region of Ethiopia was selected because 32% of the country's population with confirmed cases of AIDS lives in this area. An overwhelming number of women and girls have been victims of this insidious disease! The project has many facets including the intensification of voluntary counseling and testing, anti-retroviral treatment, and protection of mother-to-child transmission of the disease. A major component is the education of the population in terms of the disease and the prevention of its spread. As a result, numerous workshops have addressed a multiplicity of concerns, especially the needs of those who are perceived as "the most vulnerable persons" at risk of HIV/AIDS and violence. These people are orphan children, street children, disabled and elderly people, people living with HIV and AIDS, rural poor women, girls and migrants. A key strategy in mobilizing the public in response to HIV/AIDS is women capacity building and empowerment. Consequently, providing training for targeted women groups, the training of Trainers, and the establishment of support groups in different towns has been part of the overall plan to empower women. In addition, providing basic, business skill trainings for women and motivating them to engage in income generating activities is another objective in order to empower women and enhance their sense of confidence and self esteem. Other components to this project focus on the needs of orphans, migrants from rural areas, and the exploitation of daily laborers and housemaids who are often exploited sexually, thereby spreading the scourge of AIDS. In short, the pandemic is having massive costs in human life and resources. Our effort in Ethiopia is critically needed to prevent a disaster that will be irreversible and far reaching.

| Thank You Letter from Sr. Rosa |
Dear Elba:
Eileen sent me the money and I have been able to finish the second floor including the doors, windows, ceramic tiles, and kitchen furniture. We have built with the help of HOPe three rooms, two bathrooms, one kitchen, one dining room, a conference room. And, on the first floor we are designating a room for physical therapy. In addition, we are finishing the kindergarten floors, laying the ceramic tiles for the children's bathroom and finishing the exterior of the Franciscan Center. It is like a dream!!! As you may imagine, the last three months have been an ordeal for me. I had to divide my time between overseeing the construction of the building (not an easy task) teaching my kindergarten classes, taking care of the sick, the Sr. Rosa
elderly, the poor, providing counseling for people in distress and helping in the
chapel with their meetings and activities. In addition, I have been teaching my students in the music program, coordinating the holidays celebrations, serving chocolate and distributing gifts to 750 children. I ended the year exhausted but immensely happy. I was able to distribute blankets to the elderly This is my first letter in 2010, and I want it to be address to HOPe. To all of you who have contributed to make a dream come true for the poor and needy people in my community. Thank you very much.
May the Lord give all of you 100 times more for taking care of poor in distress, for donating food to the hungry, for helping children to get an education, for providing medicine to the sick; but above all for the construction of the center that is a school for children, teenagers, for people who knock on our doors searching for a friendly hand, advice comfort and HOPE. I do not have words to express my feelings. May the Lord bless you all,
Sister Rosa |

HOPe About Town! |

* Unfortunately, the weather on December 26th, Wren Day, was not suitable for the HOPe Wrenboys moving from one bar to another. The rain made it very difficult, especially for the musicians. Still, over a thousand dollars was raised for our charitable projects. Special thanks to the very talented Steve Stanislaw who came all the way from Pennsylvania to play his banjo and sing in the various bars we visited. * Elba Lopez and Eileen Kennedy report good progress in the Thrift Shop. Please let them know if and when you are available to help out. Neil O'Shea will be finishing the work in the office area and also completing some carpentry jobs in the store over the next few weeks. * Congratulations to Neil's father, Timmy O'Shea, who helps out with his wife, Sally, in the Thrift Shop and who has been a staunch financial supporter of HOPe from its inception, for being selected as Guest of Honor at the prestigious Kerry Ball, which will be held in the Astoria World Manor on March 19th.
* HOPe President, Joe McCarthy, and PRO, Gerry O'Shea, met with AGYA founder and Executive Director, Danielle Butin, in early January. AGYA, which is located in Nepperhan Ave. in Yonkers, does great work by sending all kinds of medical and related supplies to hospitals and clinics in the Developing World. Subject to approval of the cost involved by the Appropriations Committee and then by the HOPe membership, AGYA will ship a 20 foot container to Casa Visitacion, the clinic that HOPe helped construct in Honduras, before the summer.
* A big thanks to the students in Tallaght Community School in Dublin for their substantial support for HOPe. For the last six years, this school has donated a major part of its annual charitable fundraising to support our HOPe projects. The school principal, Mr. Ignatius Coffey, has shown a keen interest in our projects, and he and the school chaplain, Fr. Paul Hampson, have continued to promote our work every year.
* Despite the very inclement weather, there are continuing, unconfirmed rumors that Tom Kennedy, former President of HOPe, has been seen early in the morning running around various parks in Westchester. The word is that he is preparing to join Sean O'Shea, representing HOPe in the New York City marathon later in the year.
* Thanks to Denis Keane for organizing a charity ceili, with food included, in Mineola on New Year's Day. Pete Kelly's band provided the excellent music with Martin Mulhaire showing his fine vocal ability for the fox trots and quick steps. Denis presented a $990 cheque for HOPe to Pat Buckley and Gerry O'Shea and a similar amount to another worthy charity, POTTS, which is committed to providing meals for the poor in the Bronx. * Thanks to the members of the Martin J. Kearns Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for their recent generous contribution of $1000 to HOPe. The Division President, Michael Prunty, and his brother, Joe, are strong supporters of our work for many years, and it helps that HOPe member, Michael Keane, is a prominent member of that Division.
* And, again, we are grateful to Loretta, owner of LiKing Marketing, for volunteering to design and produce this newsletter. Gerry O'Shea. | |
