The book drive continues thru April 30, 2009. So far to date we have 622 books!

They are being distributed by the Child Development Partners who visit the families once a week for two hours, educating the families on child development, nutrition, and work on family goals.

The Bear Swamp -- That's the English translation of the word Macungie -- group of former Barack Obama campaign volunteers also held a book drive for the children enrolled in the Head Start Program.

The collection was held at Burrito Grille, in South Whitehall, a restaurant owned by a former Obama volunteer.

They collected over 288 books for the children!!

 UW - Transitions by 6

The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley has made it possible for the Roosevelt Elementary School in the Allentown School District and Community Services for Children, Inc. to team up to make the Transition from Pre-School to Kindergarten a lot easier through their Success By 6 project.

The project goals are:
     1. Increase family collaboration and involvement with the school, so that families          have the resources necessary to assist their children in the transition to
         kindergarten and school.

     2. Provide children with stable classroom experiences across time, which will lay
the foundation of continuity for them in the future.

     3. Facilitate continuity in the transition process within the community in order to            broaden community involvement in, and understanding of, the importance of             quality early learning.
The project will focus on Pre-K students not already enrolled in Roosevelt Elementary School's current Pre-K/Head Start Classroom, identifying all preschool learning opportunities within the Roosevelt school catchment area including FFN (Friend-Family-Neighbor) settings, early learning centers, Pre-K Counts centers, private nursery schools, home care, and other Head Start programs.                                                                                                                       The expected number to enroll in Kindergarten in September 2009 will be 80-85 children.
