Volunteer Management Systems Live in Michigan before Anywhere Else!
Two Michigan volunteer centers are now offering HandsOn Connect - an online volunteer management system for nonprofit agencies - and are the first centers in the country to do so! Both VOLUNTEER Lenawee! and HandsOn Battle Creek went live with HandsOn Connect in late 2010 which allows them to quickly complete tasks, such as the creation and management of volunteer opportunities, registration, tracking, and verification of volunteer activities, as well as customizable reporting. This is welcome news for nonprofits who need better volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, and statistics to secure funding, fulfill grant recruitments, and help manage budgets. Users can access VOLUNTEER Lenawee's HandsOn Connect system by visiting http://volunteer.lenaweecf.org and HandsOn Battle Creek's Hands On Connect system at www.handsonbc.org/. HandsOn Connect is brand-new technology that has been piloted at volunteer centers across the country. It is exciting the first two agencies to go public are located in Michigan - congratulations to both VOLUNTEER Lenawee! and HandsOn Battle Creek!

"I'm a Believer" Looks to Change Detroit's Image
A new campaign in Detroit looks to eliminate the negative images
broadly shared about Michigan's largest city. "I'm a Believer" was launched by Major David Bing on Tuesday, January 11 in an effort to project a positive message about the city and engage volunteers.
Detroiters will now see and hear messages related to the "I'm a Believer" campaign via billboards and print, radio, and television ads. The messages will encourage them to become local change-makers and volunteer with projects located across the city - from turning vacant lots into playgrounds and urban gardens to renovating homes.
To get involved simply visit www.believeindetroit.org and register to volunteer. Interested individuals and organizations will have access to thousands of volunteer opportunities with nonprofits, school and community volunteer programs, mentoring programs, and others. "I'm a Believer" is part of Detroit's Cities of Service initiative - an effort to work together to find new and innovative ways to harness the power of volunteerism to solve the country's most pressing challenges. Detroit has been a City of Service since December 2009.

Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan - Putting your heart in the right place
Across the state of Michigan, there are organizations that strive to recruit, train, and place volunteers. The 31 volunteer centers in Michigan serve all nonprofits and all residents in their communities and they do not limit their service to a particular issue, group of people, or type of activity. The Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan - in existence since 1977 - is no different; assisting residents of Berrien, Cass, and VanBuren Counties with the help of more than 300 local nonprofit and faith-based organizations. The Center has an active presence in their area, encouraging all types of individuals to serve; including adults, youth, families, court-ordered individuals, young professionals, church groups, and others. That encouragement stems from their mission - to promote, support, and connect volunteers working to build a strong, caring community - and a local vision where everyone volunteers. Over the years they've developed plenty of opportunities for anyone to share their gifts and talents through service and in return be engaged in a positive experience. But as Doris Higgins, executive director of the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, explains, they're always looking for ways to expand - both in the opportunities they provide, the issues they address, and the number of people they connect with. Luckily a new initiative of the Michigan Community Service Commission, Volunteer Michigan, will help them do just that. Volunteer Michigan was launched in December 2010 and facilitates the increased recruitment, engagement, and tracking of volunteers to address key public safety or public health issues in communities across Michigan. Through the help of seven grantees, including the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, Volunteer Michigan increases the capacity and infrastructure of organizations to more effectively engage volunteers, including those who are highly skilled, in our state's communities. It also enhances local volunteer infrastructure through updated technology. With a Volunteer Michigan grant of $44,919, the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan will work to address the community issue of childhood obesity. The Center and its partners will work to offer evidence-based programming focused on reaching parents and caregivers with educational materials to encourage healthy eating, increased physical activity, and reduced sedentary time. The We Can Berrien Initiative will include the coordination of any and all community events promoting healthy lifestyles. In addition to health-focused programming, the Center looks to incorporate HandsOn Connect (an online volunteer management system for nonprofit agencies) to better align citizens with local volunteer opportunities and activities. "We've been looking forward to this HandsOn technology for the past three years," explains Doris. "Hopefully a year from now, [local] volunteers will be more aware of opportunities and will more fully utilize what this technology offers." If you're in Southwest Michigan and want to get connected to this volunteer center or read about some of their service efforts (including the recent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service), visit them online at www.volunteerswmi.org. For more information on Volunteer Michigan and its seven grantees, visit www.michigan.gov/mcsc.
