This past week I had the pleasure of talking with 2 mothers about finding the right Audio Bible for their families. One of the moms spends a lot of time in the car running the kids back and forth to school and soccer and (like I am sure most moms) has gotten her fill of kids' songs. Her kids are constantly reciting lines from their favorite songs and she decided why not have them start early with memorizing and reciting scripture. She had no idea what was out there that might be kid friendly and she knew I was pretty knowledgeable in that area, so when I went over to babysit her kids she asked me what my recommendations were. She was amazed by all the different options and said she was definitely putting an Audio Bible on their Christmas list. The other mom was in a similar situation.
After sending them both emails with all the links to the different audio samples and such, I got thinking about how many other people are out there that don't know all the great Audio Bibles that are offered...so I am sending out this email to put all the links in one place so you can decided for yourself which one you like best.
So what did I recommend to the moms you ask? The first mom has a 1 1/2 year old, a 3 year old, and a 5 year old: so I recommended "The Little Kids' Adventure Bible" as it is in a format that the kids will be able to understand and remember easily. It also has kids reading it so it would be upbeat and entergetic. And since she was using it in her car and they have a CD player it was the perfect format.
The second mom has a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 1/2 year old. They both have signs of autism so are very, very smart so I recommend the Word of Promise Next Generation. Unfortunately only the New Testament is available so far for this one, but she said that would be a good jumping off point at least. Since she is an avid iPod user I recommend the mp3 version as it is easier to upload to iTunes (and is about half the price).
As a Twenty-something I prefer the Bible Experience. Being a Christian Bookstore Manager for 3 years I have accumulated almost all of the editions below and have enjoyed all of them, but I find myself using the Bible Experience the most often.
1) I prefer the NIV translation, and the TNIV is very similar.
2) It was the first fully dramatized Audio Bible to have the Whole Bible available, so I have been using it the longest.
3) I really enjoy the sound affects and actor and actress's voices.
