We Met at a Connection Event!

We are very excited about our upcoming events!  Please plan to join us for one or more Connection and Diversity Events, where school representatives and candidates meet one another.  A meeting or interview is one of the first steps towards "The Perfect Match."

At a Connection Event there may be Diversity Programs, A School Showcase, Lunch Bunch Discussions, and Interviews.  Attending events will greatly increase a candidate's chances of meeting with school representatives.

Fleisch winter snow photoCal/West Educators
has extended
its personal contacts Eastward!

Although I have worked in
Los Angeles with Cal/West since its inception, two years ago a family situation precipitated a move with my wife and children back to my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA.

What was intended to be a short-term stint evolved into an open-ended commitment to staying in Pittsburgh - it's a fantastic city in which to raise kids, has world class art/culture/sports, and some of the friendliest people you can imagine. My daughter and son also attend the same independent school that I attended, St. Edmund's Academy.

Cal/West has long had representatives in New York and Boston, but my move created an opportunity for us to expand our presence in the eastern half of the U.S.  While I have continued to attend all of the Cal/West events on the West Coast and to spend significant time there, now I also have the ability to interview many East Coast candidates in person, rather than by phone or Skype.

With one foot still planted on the West Coast, I will be spending at least half of each summer in Los Angeles, plus regular trips to California and other western states. In November I was in Seattle visiting independent schools, meeting high quality candidates, and scoping out the Washington State Convention Center, site of the NAIS Annual Conference and our Connection Event in February 2012.
POCC 2011
Lee and Fleisch at PoCC

Most recently, in support of our commitment to diversity in independent schools, I was in Philadelphia with Lee Miller attending NAIS's People of Color Conference (PoCC). Cal/West has been a co-sponsor of PoCC for many years and Lee has been a participant for over a decade. It was my first time there and what a pleasure to reconnect with many candidates we've helped place over the years.  We enjoyed talking with hiring administrators to learn more about their school's future needs. Everyone is welcomed with open arms at PoCC; please consider attending a future conference.

We have a great team at Cal/West, reaching across the country. Whether you are a candidate looking for a terrific school position, or a school needing qualified candidates to fill your openings, we look forward to working with you to find "The Perfect Match!"

Warmly,

Chris "Fleisch" Fleischner ("fly-shh")

Diversity News
SFUHS logo  Marin Academy logo

St Marks logo

Discussing diversity can be challenging, but several Bay Area independent schools are committed to deepening their diversity practices by engaging in meaningful conversations. Marin Academy, Saint Mark's School in San Rafael, and San Francisco University High School have partnered together with Cal/West Educators to co-sponsor several discussions throughout the academic year. The keystone event will be a discussion at the Northern California Cal/West Educators Diversity Symposium. The schools will also be present during events at NAIS' national conference so that attendees will have opportunities to engage directly with school representatives.

The theme for these discussions, "Thriving in the Independent School Culture," focuses on opportunities for success through engagement rather than the deficit models so familiar to many independent schools. What are the responsibilities of the institution? What are the responsibilities of the individual students, faculty members and staff? How can groups with so many varying needs work together to create communities that are dynamic and definable? These are all questions that have emerged and will be discussed throughout the year.

We will use a "fishbowl" discussion model at The Northern California event that worked successfully last year when the schools began their collaboration. This type of interaction allows a dynamic and complex conversation to emerge; one smaller circle of speakers is surrounded by a larger circle of listeners who join the smaller circle as people move in and out of the conversation.

In addition to the formally sponsored events, Marin Academy, Saint Mark's School, and San Francisco University High School have committed to internal and intra-school discourse. The diversity challenges and opportunities facing independent schools are often quite similar, and these schools are using their developing relationships to examine and share best practices.

Collectively, the work of Cal/West Educators and our schools will provide as many opportunities as possible to engage in thoughtful conversation about multiculturalism and about how to best create inclusive communities.

Introduce Yourself!
Cal/West Videos
are created
by candidates
to introduce themselves
to school representatives.

A video becomes part of a candidate's Cal/West file and is submitted to schools along with all other candidate materials.  School leaders enjoy the opportunity to put a "face to the name" while reviewing a candidate's portfolio!

If you are a candidate, this is a wonderful way to present a 'snapshot' of your personality, interests, and abilities.  Your smiling face and enthusiasm can speak volumes to a leader who is looking to fill a position!

Spotlight on Leadership
Reveta Bowers

Reveta Bowers is a highly respected name in the world of independent schools. She is the Head of School at the Center for Early Education in West Hollywood...and has been for nearly 40 years.  She first thought she wanted to become a lawyer, but actually became a teacher by accident!  We asked Reveta about the challenges she still faces, why she loves the Center so much,  and a certain special someone named Fred.

What is it about the Center that you connect with so much?
It's such a good place for kids and families. Pat Bassett, the head of NAIS, says to new heads every year, "hire happy people. When you have the opportunity to hire someone -- hire a happy person." The school is full of happy people and staff. When you have adults who are happy in a place of business or a place of work, they turn around and make it a happy place for kids. And it is...

What advice would you give a new administrator who is facing a tough decision for the first time?  The thing that I say to my admin team and new heads all the time is, "if you're making a decision that's going to be in the best interest of the children you serve -- then it's going to be the right decision." It may be hard. It's going to be hard on some of the adults. It may be hard on the board. It may be hard to even contemplate. But if it's going to be in the best interest of kids, isn't that what we're all here to do?...

Tell us something surprising about you that someone wouldn't know right away.  I have a rack full of puppets in my office that I use when kids come up to visit, or have a conversation with a child. When I taught Kindergarten 40 years ago, I had a puppet that I found in the trash that I used as the class mascot. When I have 45 year olds, my former students,  walk in that are applying to the school for their children, one of the first things they ask is, "how's Fred?" That was the name of the puppet I had when they were in kindergarten...

Emerging Leaders Workshop

Welcome - Emerging Leaders 2011

Last October Cal/West hosted our 5th annual Emerging Leaders Workshop at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Fifty seven educators from California and Washington state attended. Each was chosen by his or her Head of School to take part. This passionate group of teachers and school administrators spent the day immersed in a potential glimpse into their futures in leadership positions. It was a chance for them to meet peers, interact with the seasoned faculty presenters, and most importantly, learn about potential paths in their journeys as educators.

The faculty members who led the Workshop were stellar!
Les Frost (Emeritus Head, Saint Matthew's Parish School),
Jeanette Woo Chitjian (Director of Admissions, Marlborough School),Landis Green (Head, Wildwood School), Jeanne Huybrechts (Head, Harvard-Westlake School) Debbie Reed
(Head, Polytechnic School), and Gretchen Reed (Assistant Head for Finance and Operations, Westridge School for Girls) shared stories of their individual journeys to school leadership, and the lessons they have learned along the way.

The Workshop utilized small groups, groupthink, engaged discussions, case studies, and an approachable atmosphere enabling all the participants to come together and collaborate on what leadership in an independent school means, and how to get there.

Leadership Searches
Leadership Graphic 2
Cal/West has completed numerous senior leadership searches in the past 12 months, and is currently working on several more.

Our search for the next Head of School for San Diego Jewish Academy,
conducted in partnership with the San Diego-based firm Leadership Associates, has successfully resulted in the school's selection of Chaim Heller, who will officially assume his new position as of
July 15, 2012.

Brandeis Hillel Day School is the largest independent Jewish day school in the San Francisco Bay Area. It provides an outstanding K-8 academic education to nearly 600 students on two campuses. Brandeis Hillel is seeking an exceptional Head of School who will work with the community to continue the growth and success of the school.

Jewish Community High School of the Bay, also located in San Francisco, is seeking its first Director of Institutional Advancement who will take the school to the next level by advancing strategic resource-development planning, major-gift cultivation, and brand management.

Yavneh Academy of Dallas is seeking an experienced Head of School to helm this co-educational, college-prep high school which offers the highest quality Judaic and General Studies program to 120 students.

We are also consulting with the The Saklan School in Moraga, CA, providing guidance, structure, and resources for the school's search for its new Head of School.

As the premier educator recruiting and placement firm headquartered in California, Cal/West Educators Placement is uniquely positioned to assist schools in the West with their most important searches. From the preliminary consultation to the successful hiring, Cal/West customizes its searches according to the needs and resources of each school. We recruit across the entire U.S. and internationally.

Tillie, our little white Bichon Frise,

With a tiny bark she knows what to say.

She comes to the office everyday,

Always ready to run and to play.

She looks so cute and sweet and furry,

She answers the door in a great big hurry!

She makes our days so joyful and fun,

Brightening them up just like the sun.

Our Tillie wears her cute red vest,

Proudly representing her family at Cal/West!
