From the President...
 | | Lee Miller |
Greetings!
Although you may be reading this at the end of the summer, I am writing it in July from Catalina Island, where I go yearly to relax and re-charge! If you have never been to the island or to the little town of Avalon, I highly recommend it that you visit for at least a day, if not longer.
It has been an exciting year for Cal/West, as we again worked with hundreds of schools to help make "the perfect match" with teachers, administrators, and school leaders. One of our goals has been to increase selectivity, and we seek to work only with the best of the best! This year we accepted about 20% of applicants, resulting in one of the strongest candidate pools we have ever had. Mirroring the goal of many schools, we have also continued our commitment to diversity in filling all types of school positions.
Our Senior Leadership Search program has expanded, and we have made leadership placements in schools throughout the West. Our thanks to the school representatives who have entrusted us to manage these searches for their communities. Thanks, too, to the members of our Advisory Board, who have given us valuable input and feedback on our services.
This October we will facilitate the 5th annual Emerging Leaders Workshop, a program that now has more than 200 alumni who are on track to become department heads, deans, division heads, and even heads of school. We greatly appreciate the pro bono faculty who eagerly participate and make this experience so meaningful for its participants.
Schools undergo transitions every year, and Cal/West is no different. Two of our team members are leaving us to attend graduate programs, and two others are starting exciting positions in independent schools. We have already found terrific new team members who look forward to assisting candidates and school representatives with the same level of enthusiasm and dedication as their predecessors.
Please remember that although most positions are filled in the spring and early summer, we are here to help you year-round, We love the work we do, because we know that the educators we recruit and place each year make such a positive difference in the lives of students, families, schools, and faculties. That's why we look forward to continuing to work with you!
My best wishes to you for a great school year!
Warmest regards,
Lee Miller, President Cal/West Educators Placement

Diversity News
| |
Annually, during the recruitment season and as part of our Cal/West Connection Events, we include Diversity programming to enhance awareness and provide information for both candidates and schools. This year, we are excited to announce a wonderful partnership that Cal/West Educators has formed with three northern California schools; Marin Academy, St. Mark's School, and San Francisco University High School. The schools will co-sponsor our Northern California and NAIS in Seattle, WA. Diversity Events. The first event will be Thursday evening, March 22, 2012 in San Francisco. Our theme for the year is "Thriving in the Independent School Culture," and with this in mind we look forward to providing as many opportunities as possible to engage in thoughtful conversation about multiculturalism and creating inclusive communities in our independent schools. Please mark your calendar and watch for further details!

Candidate Videos
|
 | | Your Video Introduction! |
Cal/West Videos are created by candidates to introduce themselves to school representatives.
A video becomes part of a candidate's Cal/West file and is submitted to schools along with all other candidate materials. School leaders enjoy the opportunity to put a "face to the name" while reviewing a candidate's portfolio! If you are a candidate, this is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to a school representative. Your smiling face and enthusiasm can speak volumes to a leader who is looking to fill a position!

Spotlight on Leadership!

Bridget Anderson Director of Advancement MAKING WAVES FOUNDATION In her years as both a student and as a professional in independent schools throughout California (at The Marymount School, The Oakwood School, and The Branson School), Bridget Anderson experienced first-hand the impact that a quality education can have on children and teenagers. That is why her current position as Director of Advancement at Making Waves (www.making-waves.org) evokes such passion.
Making Waves started in 1989 as an eight year after-school program for underserved youth in Richmond, California. Since then it has grown steadily, eventually encompassing a unique - and intense - fifth-through-twelfth grade charter school, the Making Waves Academy. The umbrella Making Waves program currently serves more than 1,000 middle school, high school, and college students from Richmond and San Francisco. Bridget spoke with us about what Making Waves has meant for so many students and their families. (read more... )

Embracing Professional Development
| |
Cal/West is fortunate to have a pool of bright, passionate candidates, as well as a group of talented, dedicated school leaders with whom we work very closely. It is our pleasure to bring these groups together in ways that serve not only candidates seeking new positions but also the school communities they ultimately join and the students whose lives they touch.
We are proud to help our constituents expand their horizons. Some of the ways in which we are committed to professional development are Diversity Symposia, at which we explore issues of inclusion in school communities; Candidate Workshops, which provide tools to help candidates better represent themselves to possible employers; Lunch Bunch Discussions at our events, which give candidates and school representatives the opportunity to get together informally to discuss a variety of important issues; and the annual Emerging Leadership Workshop, which immerses rising department heads and administrators in the realities of school leadership. Read all about these programs here.

The Cal/West Bookshelf
|
Every year the Cal/West team reads a book that helps us think differently about the work we do. This summer, we read Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, by Daniel H. Pink.
After completing the reading, we had a meaningful and spirited meeting to discuss the book. During our discussion, members of the team noticed that different parts of the book resonated with each of us based on our unique backgrounds, personalities, and positions at Cal/West. Sharing our individual insights into Pink's ideas enriched our reading experience and will hopefully inspire some creative solutions of our own. (read more)
