 From the President...

Lee
Lee Miller

As we begin our 2011 recruiting, I want to congratulate the many outstanding educators whom we placed in 2010, and the wonderful schools that hired them. It was a thrill to put together "the perfect match" time and time again, and we send all of you our best wishes!

During the past year we at Cal/West have continued

Lee and Coreen
Lee and Coreen

to expand our personal contacts in the independent school world nationally, and even internationally.  In September I had the opportunity to visit The American School of London, and its Head, Coreen Hester. Coreen was previously Head of The Hamlin School in San Francisco and Assistant Head at The Branson School in Ross, California, as well as being an educator recruiter. The American School welcomes students from more than 50 countries and sends many of them on to U.S. colleges and universities. The faculty consists of educators from all over the world.

Lee and Pearl

Along with our east coast representative,

Erin Ash Sullivan, I had the privilege and honor to run a workshop on preparing resumes and interviewing skills at The Klingenstein Center at Columbia University in New York. We were invited to the Center by its head,
Pearl
Kane, during our east coast recruiting trip. Erin and I also interviewed prospective candidates at Columbia's Teachers College and at Klingenstein, and I took part in a panel discussion about independent schools at Lesley University in Cambridge.

This past fall we welcomed Sarah Lougheed-Gill (based in Los Angeles) and Lorri Hamilton (in New York) to the Cal/West team. Both of them have significant experience in independent schools in California, and will be interviewing some of our applicants in their geographic areas.

In December we attended and co-sponsored the annual NAIS "People of Color Conference," which was held in San Diego and enabled us to meet teachers and administrators from all over the country.

All of these meetings and activities are important to our ongoing recruiting of the very best senior leaders, administrators, and teachers in the independent school world. They lead up to our Connection and Diversity Events in February, March, and April, where school representatives and our candidates meet for their first one-to-one conversations.

Along with my colleagues on the Cal/West team, I look forward to continuing our personal relationships with you. Please feel free to contact any of us any time we can be of help, or just to say "hello!"

Best regards,

Lee

Leadership Searches

Cal/West is the premier educator recruiting firm in the western United States.  We are uniquely positioned to assist schools in the West with their most important searches.  While we recruit locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, our searches and fees are customized for each process.  Personal relationships plus integrity remain the most important hallmarks of our work.

Currently we are pleased to be working with  Yavneh Academy in Dallas, Texas, Mayfield Junior School in Pasadena, California, and San Francisco's  Jewish Community High School of the Bay to help them find senior leaders for July 2011 appointments.

Yavneh Academy

Yavneh Academy is seeking an experienced Head of School to lead this co-educational, college-preparatory high school (9-12) which offers the highest quality Judaic and General Studies program to 118 students.

Mayfield Junior School - new

Mayfield Junior School, a Catholic independent co-educational K-8 school, has two positions for July 2011 appointments:  Lower School Division Director (K-4) and Director of Enrollment and Marketing (K-8).  Both positions report to the Headmaster and are a part of the senior leadership team.

Administrator Spotlight

San Francisco University High School began sponsoring Cal/West's Annual Diversity Events two years ago.  This year Marin Academy will also be a sponsor.  Their two gifted leaders, Michael Diamonti and Travis Brownley, are dedicated to quality education with a strong multicultural emphasis.
Michael Diamonti
Michael

Michael Diamonti
has been the Head of San Francisco University High School for
the past 10 years.  He is a trained psychologist, and worked his way up through the ranks from public schools to universities. We talked to him about diversity outreach, challenging schedules, and his favorite novels.

Travis Brownley
Travis

Travis Brow
nley is an independent school "lifer." The current head of Marin Academy started working in the field 30 years ago, so she knows her way around faculty, administration, and students as well as anyone. We spoke to Travis about the challenges of her current job, why diversity is important, and her secret passion for...dancing!

This winter, Cal/West introduced a series of workshops intended to help candidates improve upon their interviewing skills.

Our inaugural workshop, led by Elizabeth McGregor, Head of School, Westridge School for Girls, and David Carter, Human Resources Director, The Buckley School, was a tremendous success!

Mini Interviews
Mock interviews

Candidates who attended spent the morning listening to sage advice from our school administrator leaders and practicing new skills with feedback from their peers, workshop facilitators, and the Cal/West Staff.  We look forward to providing more opportunities like this one!

Our next workshop will be on January 18, 2011. The workshop will be led by Dawn Cunnion, Associate Head, Brentwood School, and Omid Kheiltash, Assistant Head,  Seven Arrows Elementary School.  Please contact workshop@CalWestEducators.com if you would like to attend.
