From the President... Greetings!
Lee Miller
 | I am
writing this from Catalina Island, where I
have come almost yearly throughout my entire life, to relax and unwind. I hope
that you, too, had an enjoyable summer. Now that
the 2010-11 school year has begun, I want to reflect
for a moment on the past year, the last sixteen years, and the future. I started
recruiting and placing teachers, administrators, and leaders in private and
independent schools in 1994 almost as an accident, working alone in my home and
later with one assistant, and then two. Today I have
an amazing and dedicated team at Cal/West Educators
Placement who work hard every day for both candidates and
schools, plus fabulous representatives and consultants across the U.S.
who help us connect with the best people no matter where they are. Over the years we
have interviewed thousands of applicants, ranging from experienced educators to those just beginning their teaching careers. We have also contributed to the education of many more
thousands of K-12th grade students by matching countless candidates to
positions in wonderful schools. Our work is
built on personal connections. It is always a pleasure to meet with leaders of
schools throughout the country
and keep our connections alive. We also get important feedback from the members
of our Advisory Board, who tell us about their challenges and successes and
help us do the best possible job of supporting their endeavors. One ongoing Cal/West goal, which mirrors the objective of many
schools, is increasing the diversity of those professionals who work in
independent schools. We are proud to point out that the number of educators of
color who are hired is close to thirty percent of our total placements. Another
aspect of our work which has evolved and expanded is the
recruitment and placement of Senior Leaders, including Heads of School,
Associate and Assistant Heads, Division Heads, and Directors of Admission and
Development. I want to thank the many school representatives who have entrusted
us to manage these searches for their communities. As we begin
recruiting (which is a year-round process) and placement for Fall 2011, my team and
I look forward to meeting and getting to know hundreds of
prospective candidates, and helping them to find "The Perfect
Match" for their abilities, goals, and aspirations. My best wishes to you for a great school year! Warmest regards,
Lee Miller, President Cal/West Educators Placement

Recruiting Events
| Cal/West's Connection & Diversity Events provide an opportunity for school
representatives and qualified candidates to meet each other
face-to-face for important initial interviews. In fact, more than 40%
of our candidates who were hired this past season had their initial school interview at a Connection Event!

Diversity Events
|
Supporting multiculturalism in independent schools is the emphasis of our Diversity Events.
 |
Annually,
during the recruitment season and as part of our Cal/West Connection
Events, we include Diversity programming to enhance awareness and
information for both candidates and schools. This
year, we are excited to announce a wonderful partnership that Cal/West
Educators has formed with Bay Area schools Marin Academy and San
Francisco University High for our Northern California and Washington
D.C. Diversity Events. The first event will be Thursday evening, February
10th, 2011 in San Francisco. Our
theme for the year is "Thriving in the Independent School Culture," and with this in mind we look
forward to providing as many opportunities as possible to engage in
thoughtful conversation about multiculturalism and creating inclusive
communities in our independent schools. Please mark your calendar and watch for further details!

Candidate Videos
| Your Video Introduction!
 | Last year Cal/West introduced a pilot program which
encouraged our candidates to create one-to-two minute videos to introduce
themselves to school representatives. We are now expanding the program, and
making it even easier for school administrators who are viewing a candidate's
portfolio to also see his or her "Video Intro." If you are a candidate, this is a wonderful way to introduce
yourself to a school representative. Your smiling face and enthusiasm can speak
volumes to a leader who is looking to fill a position. For more information, go to Create a Video Introduction.

Heads with Class!
| Balancing all the priorities of being the Head of an independent school makes it perhaps one of the most intense jobs at any institution; in addition to being the face of the school, one must address the needs of students, parents, faculty, board members, community, and alumni, plus the school's financial balance sheet. We interviewed two school Heads at very, very different points in their careers to learn a bit about what it takes to run a successful independent school.
Les Frost
 |
Les Frost, St. Matthew's Parish School, Pacific Palisades, California, is retiring next year after 27 years as Head.
What is the biggest change you have seen since you have been Head of School?
When I began, there was little in the way of technology - we're talking about people with typewriters instead of computers. There was also no director of admissions, or a school counselor, or a school minister. Most of our administrative positions did not exist 26 years ago. My job evolved. I was sort of the director of finance, I was the development director, I was the director of admissions. We weren't specialized in what we were doing. As a school head, you were the jack of all trades - and what better way to learn how a school functions, then to be directly involved in so many of those things?
Aimeclaire "AC" Roche
 |
AC Roche has just completed her first year as Head of the Bishops School in La Jolla, California. The school recently celebrated its 100th anniversary.
What's the difference between being an Assistant Head versus Head of School?
Being an Assistant Head can be configured differently at different schools, but for me it was being in charge of day-to-day operations at the school. I tended to be the person who did a lot of work behind the scenes. Being Head of School has internal components, and also has this big external piece to it: I have relationships with community members, alums, and parents. That's a whole new part of the job for me, to be the representative of the school. As Assistant Head you're seen less as the message maker; as the Head, it ultimately falls to you to be the most articulate and passionate representative of the school.
On another note - since you are so new, what's something about you that would surprise people?
I love to sing in the car to the radio, loudly, and badly! I'm always turning up Lady Gaga!

Introducing: Candidate Placement WORKSHOPS!
|
The Cal/West Team is extremely excited to introduce our new Candidate Placement Workshops, beginning
this fall!
In an effort to better prepare our candidates for their meetings with school representatives,
we will offer workshops focusing on interviewing skills and demonstration lessons. Candidates will learn tips and be able to practice their skills with fellow educators. Each workshop will include the participation of respected school administrators who will provide invaluable insight on these very important aspects of the
hiring process. Look for more information regarding these workshops
coming soon!

From time to time the Cal/West team reads a book and discusses it
together. The books are chosen for their professional development potential, and at
our weekly staff meetings we take time to talk about what we learned and how we
can apply these lessons to our practice. The most recent book we read is Switch - How to Change Things When Change is Hard!
If you are a fan of Malcolm
Gladwell's The Tipping Point and Blink, or Freakonomics by Steven Leavitt and Stephen J. Dubner, you will probably enjoy Switch by Chip and Dan Heath. The
subtitle of the book, "How to Change Things When Change
Is Hard," is a straightforward statement of the book's goal. Using interesting and entertaining case
studies, the authors break down the
process of change - whether at the personal, organizational, or institutional
level - into simple, prescriptive guidelines. Examples convincingly illustrate
how everything from weight loss to political revolution can be successfully
achieved by groups and individuals! The essential argument of the
book is that we are in constant conflict between the rational side of our brain (the "Rider") and the emotional side (the "Elephant"). In order for change
to be successful, one must take a three-pronged approach to any challenge. The
book is conveniently divided into sections based on these three concepts: "Direct
the Rider, Motivate the Elephant, and Shape the Path." Following this logic leads to the fascinating realization
that solutions to big problems often require only small changes in behavior,
and that clarity of both purpose and direction are profound motivators for
people. Although the Heaths are
writing primarily for businessmen and women, the principles are applicable to
any kind of leader, including teachers and school administrators. In fact, Switch was the selected book distributed
at this year's National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) conference in
San Francisco, and we found it to be an interesting and worthwhile read.
