From the President...

Lee

 A teacher affects eternity;
he can never tell where his influence stops.
~Henry Brooks Adams

It has been an exciting and challenging 12 months for us here at Cal/West Educators Placement. Among other things, we welcomed three former school heads to our terrific Cal/West team!

One important aspect of the Cal/West mission is our commitment to increasing diversity among the ranks of leaders and faculty in independent schools. We are proud that more than 20% of the candidates we placed in the past year have identified themselves as diverse.

To that end, we have regularly attended and been one of the sponsors of the annual NAIS "People of Color Conference" (PoCC). This national forum takes place simultaneously with the Student Diversity Leadership Conference. In December more than a thousand participants attended each of the two conferences, in Denver.  It was an inspirational gathering and we look forward to PoCC 2010, which will take place in San Diego!

Cal/West is unique regarding our attention to detail and our commitment to personal service, both to candidates and to the schools we serve. We personally interview each applicant, accept only those whom we feel are qualified, and strive to submit candidates only for positions for which they are well suited.

We are pleased that school leaders know they can rely on us to provide the best possible service and that they can call on us (seven days a week if necessary) for help and advice.

We look back with pride at the many school leaders, administrators, and teachers whom we have helped to place in independent and private schools over the years, and think about the positive impact they have had on thousands of young people.

And, we look forward to speaking with you soon as we help you find the next "Perfect Match."

Sincerely,

 Lee Miller

Senior Leadership Searches

With the addition of three former school heads to our recruiting team, Cal/West has greatly increased its abilities and resources in the specialized area of retained Senior Leadership Searches.

Recently we have engaged in searches for:
  • Head of School, large independent K-12
    day school, Orange County
  • Head of School, K-6, Los Angeles
  • Associate Head, Pre K-5
independent school, San Francisco Bay area
  • Elementary School Principal, large
    religiously-affiliated school, Los Angeles
  • Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, grade 6-12
    independent school, San Francisco Peninsula
  • Elementary School Principal, Los Angeles
  • Chief Financial Officer, Pre K-8 School, San Diego Area
We also placed an Interim Associate Head for an immediate opening, and advised a co-op nursery school on the search to replace its Director, who is retiring after 25 years at the school.

While we recruit candidates locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, Cal/West is the only major educator search firm located in California. We are ideally suited to assist schools in the western U.S. in their most important searches - for Heads, Associate Heads, Directors, Division Heads, and other essential leaders and administrators.

Our searches and our fees are customized for each situation, and personal relationships plus integrity remain our most important guiding principals.
Cal/West Spotlight

Alexis Spina

One of the newest members of our Cal/West Team, Jacqueline Olivier, came to us with a background as an experienced independent school leader. Before becoming our Director of Recruiting and Placement, she was Head of two schools and Assistant Head at another.

Jacqueline brings a strong sense of the "school side" of recruiting and placement to Cal/West. We talked to her about some of her experiences...

What has been most surprising about working with Cal West?

The most surprising thing was learning what has to happen before a Cal/West candidate's résumé and other materials are ready to be sent out for consideration by a school. As a School Head I received résumés, but didn't realize that there was so much to the process before a portfolio is sent out. Cal/West really adds a 'personal touch.'

Tell me a little more about the process...
First, we look at applicants in terms of general information - education, work experience, and credentials, plus where they went to college, whether they attended an independent school, and how much classroom or school leadership experience they have.  We look for interesting details that make a person unique. We read between the lines, ask questions, and learn as much as possible about the applicant.

The Cal/West team often works with candidates to help them present themselves in the best possible way. Occasionally, if we feel strongly that someone will be just right for a specific position, we'll call the school's Head personally and say, "We recommend that you interview this person, because he or she is a great fit for your opening and your school community."

How does the Cal/West 'personal touch' make a difference?
Here's an example: Late last summer I interviewed someone whom I thought was phenomenal. Then a Head of School called frantically - one of his teachers had gotten sick and wasn't going to be able to return. I spoke to that Head personally and said, "I've been a Head myself, I just interviewed an excellent educator; and I think she could be great. If it were me, I'd hire her!" And he DID hire her, and he said that it has been a great fit.

I've found that it's a great feeling when you connect a school and a candidate and create "The Perfect Match!"

 3rd Annual
Emerging Leaders Workshop

Emerging Leaders Workshop

The room was alive with excitement as more than 50 "emerging leaders" from across California and as far as Washington gathered at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles to spend a day exploring what may be their future paths. The purpose of this, our 3rd Annual Emerging Leaders Workshop, was to expose a variety of experienced teachers and administrators to the realities, challenges, requirements, and opportunities for advancement in school leadership.

The presenters were stellar! Reveta Bowers (Head, Center for Early Education), Jeanette Woo Chitjian (Director of Admissions, Marlborough School), Landis Green (Head, Wildwood School)  Doreen Oleson (Head, Saint Mark's School), and Debbie Reed (Head, Polytechnic School), shared stories of their individual paths to school administration and their thoughts on nurturing leaders and leadership skills.

Here's what some of the participants had to say about the event:
 Group Discussion
"I enjoyed talking with other professionals and learning how to be a more effective leader. I especially enjoyed learning about the six styles of leadership and how best to utilize each style in various situations."

"I liked the informal setting and the involvement of the faculty with the different groups. I also appreciated the focus on the participants' refection on themselves and their attributes for leadership roles."

Alexis Spina"The Emerging Leaders Workshop was eye-opening in that it showed that 'leaders' can exhibit leadership by example every day in every conceivable way, small and large; and that they can have a profound positive impact on all those around them."

We at Cal/West are delighted to be able to provide such a meaningful and enlightening experience for so many future leaders!
