2010 Youth of the Year

The Boys & Girls Club gave me purpose.  When I have purpose, I have motivation.  With motivation, I have the strength to succeed.
My name is Preston Green.  I have been an active member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County for over seven years and am proud to have been named the 2010 Youth of the Year.
Although it hasn't been easy, I have tried to soar in the face of adversity. In addition to the support I receive from my mother, I look to the Boys & Girls Club for positive guidance. As the man of the house, I do my best to set a remarkable example for my younger siblings. I work a part-time job to help support my family, and manage household responsibilities.  I help my mom watch my brothers and sisters and help them with homework.  My family and I work as a team.
In addition to helping my family, I have volunteered at my Club by cleaning, helping teach kids about healthy lifestyles with the Team Fit program, and serving as a chaperone on special field trips. Currently, I serve as the President of the Keystone Club, a teen group dedicated to leadership and community service.
As a senior of Smyrna High School, I have successfully completed several Honors classes while also participating in one of the state's most accomplished JROTC programs.  I am looking forward to achieving my dream of attending Middle Tennessee State University in the fall semester.
The Boys & Girls Club not only makes a difference in my life but in the life of each child that walks through the front doors. I hope that I can be a role model for a child in need.

Annual Dinner

We are excited to welcome our newest Board Members from left to right: Derrick Williams, Chuck LaLance, Beth Brown, Eric Newell, Steve Waldron and Board President Kelly Rollins.

The 23rd Annual Dinner was a night of celebration.  2009 was a rollercoaster year for our Boys & Girls Club.  We enjoyed getting together with friends to commemorate our success.
Five new Board Members were inducted and awards were handed out to outstanding staff and volunteers who help make this organization the Positive Place for Kids.
Special thank you to Carolyn's Creations for the delicious dinner and Martin's Home & Garden for plants and flowers for the evening.

SMART Girls
The girls took over the Club for five Saturdays to participate in SMART Girls.  They engaged in hands on activities and discussions which focused on personal values, friendships, team building, physical development, body image, and effective decision making.
SMART Girls is a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of young girls.

Keystone Conference

On Friday, January 15, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rutherford County hosted the 2010 Keystone Mini-Conference for over 50 teens from across middle Tennessee.
Keystone Club is a chartered small group club that provides teens an opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience.  They conduct activities in three areas:  academic success, career exploration and community service.
Keystone Clubs from Murfreesboro, Smyrna and Maury County participated in the conference.  Breakout sessions for the youth covered topics on gangs, community involvement and managing their personal finances.  The keynote speaker for the evening was life-long activist and eight time NAACP honoree Mrs. Margaret Scrivens.
Registration for the conference was a donation of a non-perishable food item which in turn was donated to the Kurios Farm Karen Refuge Community of Smyrna.
