Hello everyone,
Muscle is a big topic in our outdoor and indoor classes because we know that muscle is where it's at in terms of keeping our metabolisms high and our bodies powered for daily life...plus, nothing better than looking at yourself in the mirror and spotting a finely sculpted shoulder looking back at you.
A few weeks ago I met with Jordan Robertson who is a Naturopathic Doctor and also a Tread Powerfully member and a couple days later I had a number of you asking about getting your body composition tested. It was meant to be! Jordan practices at the Sweet Medicine Integrative Health Center in the Brant Arts Building. She works closely with Medical Doctors and other allied health professionals to bring her patients the safest, most effective health care.
Jordan has offered us sessions where she will conduct an information session on body composition and will privately test 20 individuals. The cost of the information session and the test is $10 (cash only) per person. I am expecting a lot of interest so another evening session will be held during May for any individuals we cannot fit into the April dates.
Read on as Jordan explains so clearly why you should be interested in your body composition:
"Body composition tests look at the percentage of lean tissue versus fat
tissue stored in the body. This is an accurate measure of health in that it
takes into consideration many aspects that your body's crude weight fails to
account for. Lean tissue includes both muscle and organ tissues which
ideally should account for a large precentage of body composition, depending
on your gender and age. Sarcopenia, which is the medical term to describe
age related muscle loss, increases a person's risk of developing chronic
metabolic and degenerative diseases such as diabetes. Decreased lean muscle
mass (and thus increased fat mass) causes multiple hormonal imbalances that
can lead to symptoms such as carbohydrate cravings, decreased energy, PMS
and immune system dysfunction. Understanding body composition is an
important measure of health that is often over looked.
Bioelectrical impedance is one method of evaluating body composition. A
device uses variable frequencies of electrical currents between areas on the
body to measure the level of impedance of each frequency as it flows through
different tissue types. These measurements can determine whether the current
is flowing through lean tissue, water, or fat mass and give a percentage of
each type of tissue. This can be useful as a diagnostic tool in that many
patients are within their desired weight, but have an imbalance in the
amount of lean tissue versus fat mass. It is also a useful measure of
progess when working with diet and exercise prescriptions. The test is a
more sensitive indicator of improvement than continually weighing yourself
on a scale."
First Session:Monday, April 27th - 10:30 am at Sidekicks School of Martial Arts
Second Session:Tuesday, April 28th - 7:45 pm at Sweet Medicine Integrative Health Center in the Brant Arts
Building, Suite 301.
To participate, you
will each need to bring to the session your height in centimeters and
your weight in kilograms from that day. I will have my scale handy if
you don't have one at home.
If you are interested, please reply to this email with the day that interests you and I will schedule individuals in order and create a waiting list for the additional date in May when the 20 spots are filled.
