Anticipation to free your mind!
Welcome to the cold everyone,

You really did brave all that last week's weather sent your way, that was so amazing guys.  It's just more proof to us that we can adjust our exercise to the weather and still remain outdoors.  And yes, we did have class yesterday morning at 6:45 am as the wind swept snow across the roads and I know you'll believe me when I tell you that we had sweat dripping down our backs and faces by the end of class.  I was prepared for the chill and varied the route and threw in some variety to keep us out of the full head wind.

On to my thought of the week.  Stress is a familiar topic in the media and self-help books.  For me personally, stress comes when I become fixated on a particular issue in my life to the point where it creates a buzz in my head.  I read an article a couple weeks ago that suggested one of the best ways to relieve stress was to make sure that you were scheduling in "fun" for yourself.  At first I thought it seemed rather trivial, but after thinking about it for a few days I realized they were onto something.  In order to release and free my mind from the buzz, I needed to spend time away from the issue, away from the dirty kitchen floor and away from the computer screen.   So for the past two Fridays I have forced myself to take just 1 hour during the waking hours (versus at 11 pm when I should be thinking of sleep) to do something "fun".  You might be chuckling saying that 1 hour is nothing, but think about what that post-TP coffee chat means to you in your week!  The first week I wandered in a store looking at one of a kind knick-knacks and last week I did some cutting and pasting for a special project.  It may sound silly, but scheduling this time in for myself at the end of the week made the days leading up to it a little more stress free.

If my Friday 1 hour anticipation brings a little more sanity to my week, think about what a personal goal that will require mental and physical preparation could do for you.  You may choose to do this to set a personal benchmark time if it's your first race, to increase your fitness level even further, or to just have fun and join with your fellow group members!

Bob Brake, on behalf of Burlington Runners, has invited us to participate in the:

 8 km Robbie Burns Race
Sunday, January 25th
9:00 am
More details at:  http://www.burlingtonrunners.com/index.cfm?id=5707

The race will leave from Central High School, right up the street from Joelle's.   This personal invitation is very special to our power walking community as races are primarily geared to runners and the walking categories are typically regarded as strolls or "fun walks" where the goal is to view the nature, not hussle your tush.  In our Turkey Turbo class, we completed 8.13 km in 64 minutes, and that was even with stops and moving muscle.

We have been offered a discount group rate!  If we register 20 people, the price is $25 (instead of the regular rate of $30 plus $3 processing fee).  If we register more than 30, the cost is $20.  This includes the tartan jammie pants, finishers medal, yummy breakfast, entry in draw prizes and awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall in the power walking category.  You have choices:  run the race, do a combo of running and walking or power walk the entire race.   Since there are separate prizes for the walking category, it is important that only those walking the entire race register in this category.  If you are unsure of your gait and whether you sometimes switch to a run, let me know and I can give you feedback!   Lisa and I will make sure you are all prepared for the race by continuing the speed intervals and the TP Turbo class beginning in January will give you the distance training you need.  I will also be prepping you with the necessary race etiquette to make the whole experience smooth and amazing!

If you are interested, here's the process:
1) Email me to let me know you are "in"
2) Bring your $25 in cash to your next class (if we get over 30 I will give you back $5)
3) Sign the group registration form and waiver that I will have with me at class
4) Complete all above steps by December 19th

I will be teaching all week and remember that the evening classes this week are as follows:  Tuesday at 5:45 pm (Tread Powerfully), Wednesday at 6:30 pm (Intense Strength at the Seniors Centre), Thursday at 6:30 pm (Tread Powerfully).

Double up those mittens and cover up those ears!
