What's New at www.ecoplum.com June 2010 Newsletter
|
Greetings!
June is my birthday month - as well as my husband Corey's - Happy Birthday to us! Luckily Corey did not have to guess what I wanted for my birthday since I announced it to the world in my latest blog post. I can't wait to get my new composter and let you know about my experiences using it in the big city!
Speaking of composting, I am so excited to announce that we now carry Bagasse compostable and biodegradable dinnerware in our EcoShop!! So replace those paper plates for your Fourth of July Bar-B-Ques with these awesome plates (and cups and bowls) made of SUGARCANE FIBER! Stock up for all your outdoor summer parties and use code JUNEPIE at checkout for a 10% discount.
Now that it's time to head back to the beach, make sure you cover up, bring sunscreen, and moisturize. The Environmental Working Group has come out with its 2010 Sunscreen Guide and Chryso has the scoop on organic and non-toxic skin lotions in her column this month.
Last month, we announced that Anne Maxfield had joined as a columnist on our site. Learn a little more about Anne below and read about her latest advice for yummy local treats.
I didn't think it could get any better, but now we also have Robin Baron of Robin Baron Design contributing with her monthly "Designing Green with Robin Baron" column. Robin has appeared on television and has been featured in many
publications, such as New York Magazine, The Modern Estate, and Country
& Town House. We are thrilled to have Robin's contributions.
Finally, Dede's Green Scene this month is all about one of our favorite green celebrities, Ed Begley, Jr. I haven't seen his show yet but it sounds quite entertaining! Thanks, Dede, for the review!
By the way, if you are wondering what to get Dad for Father's Day, how about an Amazon Kindle? Buy one through EcoPlum and get EcoChipz to use or donate to one of our causes!
Have a wonderful June, a very HAPPY FATHER'S DAY and a safe, fun and healthy Fourth of July! As always, thanks for your support!
Best, Gia Machlin President and CEO Please feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends and family!

Meet our newest team member. This month...Anne Maxfield
Anne
Maxfield was brought up in the early days of Julia Child, but back then what
she really thrived on was the bounty of prepared foods. Onion rings in a can,
on top of macaroni and cheese from a box, with those cute Vienna franks (also from a can), and there was
a great dinner! Parents going out? Frozen pot pies, or even better, a TV
dinner...bliss. Why whole grains and fresh vegetables, when there were cans or
frozen foods? Fast
forward to a new century. Anne
Maxfield is a multi-talented serial entrepreneur. Her vision for the Accidental
Locavore is to provide viewers with a person like them, to take the mystery out
of farmer's markets, and show them how she cooks with what's local and fresh. Currently,
the Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of It's All About Aging LLC. Anne's
vision for the website www.itsallaboutaging.com is to provide baby boomers with the
information and tools they need to plan and care for their aging parents. Anne
is also an Adjunct Professor at Marist
College for the Spring
2010 semester. In addition to her work on the Accidental Locavore, and It's All
About Aging, she is currently developing Mini-Money, an online source of
financing for women entrepreneurs. Twenty
years ago, Anne Maxfield co-founded Project-Solvers, Inc, to provide freelance
talent to the apparel industry. It was acquired by Select Staffing in 2005. Anne's
business model to provide free-agent talent to leading designers, manufacturers
and retailers in the apparel and accessories industries made Project Solvers,
Inc. the premier "creative outsourcing solution" for those industries, and
created a $20 million dollar industry. Another first for Anne was the creation
of www.projectsolvers.com one of
the earliest web sites created to provide information about jobs and fashion
industry trends on the Internet. Anne
Maxfield holds a B.F.A with honors from Rhode Island School of Design. After her studies at R.I.S.D., she spent a
year in Paris
and was awarded one of five national scholarships to attend the Chambre Syndicate de la Haute Couture.
She serves on the Advisory Board for Consultants 2 Go, and is a former Advisory
Board member of Marist College, and the University of Delaware.
She is the winner of the 2005 NAWBO Signature Awards. Anne has been a frequent speaker at the
Fashion Institute of Technology, R.I.S.D., Pratt Institute, The New School, Marist College
and has made many appearances on NY1 Small Business Report, and Bloomberg TV.
She is also a long time member of the Women President's Organization, and in
her spare time, is an avid sports enthusiast whose hobbies include figure
skating and golf.

Chryso Beauty Buys
There's
nothing sweeter than slathering on body lotion after a shower. And
it's all the more indulgent to do so with a scent that you completely
adore-like vanilla, lavender, watermelon or bubble gum! Sweet bouquets
aside, what counts when it comes to a product that you use all over
your skin, day after day, sometimes more than once a day, are the
ingredients it's made of.
Most
lotions contain chemical preservatives, which prevent the growth of
fungus and bacteria, as well as prevent oxygen from spoiling products,
according to the American Academy of Dermatology. However, these
preservatives are the second most common cause of skin reactions, says
the AAD. Read More!

Dede's Green Scene: "Living With Ed"
Ed Begley
Jr. may have been in the film "Best in Show," but he's also the best in
being green. Ed is a well-known environmentalist. He's toured across
the country discussing ways to reduce one's carbon footprint. He even
sells his own line of natural cleaning products that you can even
drink! Now, Ed Begley Jr. and his family star in their own reality
show, "Living with Ed," on Planet Green.
The show is already in its third season and focuses on Ed and his
wife, Rachelle, and the struggles of being married to one of the
greenest men on the planet. Read More! |
Accidental Locavore: Happy Memorial Day, First Farmbasket
You know I
stumbled into the locavore
arena last summer with my
surprise farmbaskets. That's
why I consider myself an accidental locavore. Also, living
in New York, there are way too many things; tea, salt (sorry Nanny Bloomberg) and olive oil, to name a
few, that are not, and will never be made within a 90 mile radius.
Could you live without them?
Memorial
Day marks the beginning of summer in so many ways. This year for me,
it's the start of another great season of surprise farmbaskets.Read More!

Designing Green with Robin Baron: The Kitchen
Hi! I'm
very excited about my new column "Designing Green with Robin Baron." I
have been an interior designer with my own firm for 20 years, and I have
always been eco-conscious. What is inspiring to me now is that
sustainable design has become a high priority of home décor
manufacturers and vendors creating the opportunity for green products to
have more style than ever before. Style no longer has to
be sacrificed when designing an eco-conscious home! From recycled glass
tile to no VOC paints and finishes to reclaimed wood and
sustainably-harvested wood...there are so many sustainable products
available so that style does not have to take a back seat. I'm looking
forward to sharing these with you! Read More!

From The EcoPlum Blog: All I Want for my Birthday is a Composter.... Not sure if you've noticed, but the subtitle to this blog is
"Confessions of a Reformed Consumer." Well it doesn't get much more
reformed than this: just a few years ago I was longing for shoes,
handbags, and lots of good STUFF for my birthday. Why a perfect
birthday usually included a stop at Saks Fifth Avenue to buy something
totally frivolous for myself. A Composter??? Growing up, I used to
confuse the words "Compost" and "Compote" - I knew one
was a fruity jam and the other was a stinky mess. In fact, I was so
careful not to use the wrong word because if I said "compost" it would
be like saying "toilet" or "sewer" (not that I didn't already have a
huge potty mouth back then, but I didn't want to use this term in the
wrong context). My main association with the word "compost" was with
the disgusting pile of food garbage my mom would keep in the kitchen and
periodically throw out in her vegetable garden as "fertilizer". Yuck. Read More!

Ecoplum Photos (this month they are more like Gia's personal photos, but what the heck)
Here's a (blurry) picture of me (Gia) with the legendary George McGovern
at a fundraiser last week.

Here are some pics from the Ensemble Studio Theatre Benefit in May which honored my dear friend, entrepreneur, leader, and woman of many talents: Ann Sachs (also honored were Ann's husband Roger Morgan and actor Dominic Chianese from the Sopranos).
