January 2010 Newsletter
Greetings!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  Wow 2010!  I hope you all had nice holidays and that you are feeling energized and rejuvenated in the New Year!  I know I am!

Well due to the holidays, vacations, and some personal leaves, we are a little light on content this month.  So, we'll just share some pictures from our December events with you along with some tips and suggestions for personal sustainability pledges in the new year, and Michael's summary of the Copenhagen talks.

Thanks to all of you who tried Netflix for free through us in December!  We will be sending our donation to Climate Counts and will be doing another similar promotion soon!

Lastly, I have to say that I started off my new year with a great surprise - I won a FREE Amazon Kindle from www.greenwala.com (thanks, guys!).  Well I LOVE IT!!!  I think it is the coolest thing ever and I am reading more than I have in a long time - it's really fantastic!   Of course I must disclose that I have an interest in saying this since we are still running our Kindle promotion (see below) - but I really do love my Kindle - ask my kids.  They think I love it more than them (how crazy is that??)

Wishing you all good health, peace, much success, and personal fulfillment in 2010.  Thanks for your continued support.

Best,

From The Blog:

As the days get longer...Personal Sustainability resolve gets stronger

Here are 10 suggested Personal Sustainability Practices (PSPs) with some resources to get you started.  Make a pledge to take on one, or more, of these for 2010.  Or make up your own.

PSP #1: Stop buying plastic disposable water bottles.  Carry around your own reusable bottle in your backpack, briefcase, shoulder bag, or purse.

PSP #2: Stop using disposable plastic shopping bags.  Carry around at least one  Chicobag with you - these definitely fit easily into your pocketbook, briefcase, even pocket.

PSP #3: Recycle at home and at work.  Check out our "What do do with your stuff" page for where and how to recycle different types of materials.

PSP #4: Stop using disposable coffee cups.  Carry around your own reusable coffee mug.  Ask for a ceramic "for here" cup if you plan to hang around the coffee shop to enjoy your coffee.

PSP #5: Stop buying wrapping paper - use colorful newspaper, children's art projects, reusable gift bags or cloth for your gifts.

PSP #6: Stop using disposable wrap and bags for your kids' lunches.  Instead purchase reusable bags and lunch materials.

PSP #7: Eat less meat.  Reducing the amount of meat you eat can have a significant impact on the environment - methane from cows is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

PSP #8: Take public transportation whenever you are in a city.  Check this out for a guide of public transportation options in your city.

PSP #9: Ask yourself  "do I really need it?" when you are about to buy a new appliance.  If you do need it, make sure it is Energy Star rated.

PSP #10:  Stop using paper plates and utensils.  If absolutely necessary, buy ones made of recycled and biodegradable material.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful.  We are here to help you every step of the way.  Please share your PSP pledges with us.  And stay tuned for ways to measure your progress.

From The Orchard:

Farwell Copenhagen, Next Stop Mexico City

A month has almost passed since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) widely known as COP-15 was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Many had hoped that this summit would lead to an accord that would progress from Kyoto's success. The Kyoto Protocol (which came out of the COP-3 Climate Talks in Kyoto, Japan in 1997) was aimed at combating global warming through an international environmental treaty.

Unfortunately, Copenhagen's failure to produce a legally binding climate change accord has resulted in finger pointing. South Africa's Environment Minister Buyelwa Sonjica and her two top climate change negotiators blamed the host country Denmark for the way it guided the conference, claiming that "substantive talks were hijacked by debates over how to handle the process." The Sydney Morning Herald blamed China, by stating that "China's strategy was simple: block the open negotiations for two weeks, and then ensure that the closed-door deal made it look as if the West had failed the world's poor once again."
