Happy December! As Jon Stewart said to Al Gore: "Should I believe you or my rock hard nipples?" Yes, it is getting cold out there, but global warming is real and nothing to joke about. Well there may not be a "binding" agreement coming out of the UN Climate Talks in Copenhagen this month, but President Obama will be there, and the participating nations will be laying the groundwork for what will hopefully be a binding agreement in 2010. EcoPlum will be reporting news all week via our blog, on facebook and Twitter.
Back here in the U.S. we are getting ready for the holiday season. Along with the holidays comes all the shopping, consumption, and, yes, waste. We hope to help you make more responsible choices this holiday season - from the Christmas trees and Hannukah candles you select for your home to the gifts you decide to give. Brianna's Happy Chrismahanakwanzakah!!
article is full of helpful tips to green your holiday. We have also brought back Michael's Great Christmas Tree Debate presentation from last season. Be sure to check out our EcoTipz for suggestions on how to give your old unwanted toys a second life with kids in need and how to gift wrap using cloth!

So the
Jack-o-lantern is in the compost and the Thanksgiving meal is probably
still in your tummy...and before you know it, the holidays are among
us. That's right---it's time to start shopping, decorate your home and
celebrate the season with family and friends. But before you put up
ole' Tannenbaum or take out the Menorah, consider how you can be a
little more environmentally responsible this holiday season.
Instead
of purchasing standard taper candles for your Menorah, kinara or
Christmas decor in general, investigate options for cleaner candles
made of beeswax or soy.
Conventional candles contain additives that my stain fabric and
petroleum-based ingredients that create a dirty burn. Beeswax and/or soy candles burn much cleaner and will still make your "holiday of lights" sparkle and glow. You
can also consider creating your own candelabrum if you are in need of
one with old plumbing hardware, wine bottles or different-sized candle
holders. Read More!
EBooks
Reading
is a universal pleasure. Instruction manuals, novels, cookbooks, blank
journals, children's pop-up books, and biographies line the shelves of
houses, apartments, offices, and schools around the world. Yet
producing those books takes a tremendous amount of energy.
Paper
manufacturing and printing, binding, and shipping the finished product
also generates devastating air and water pollution. As sad as it is to
give up the pleasures of reading on paper, e-books may just be the ideal alternative. E-books can be bought online and read using mobile devices, such as the Kindle (from Amazon) or the or the Nook
(from Barnes and Noble). Unlike computers, these e-readers are designed
with electric ink displays (which don't require backlighting), so you
don't suffer from eye fatigue after looking at the screen for too long. Read More!

Second Chance Toys
Do you
have plastic toys that your child doesn't use anymore? Instead of
throwing them away, why not give them to a child who would love to play
with them! Second Chance Toys is a community-based initiative which
rescues and recycyles plastic toys for needy children at local
community organizations while at the same time, helping the
environment. They are getting ready for the big holiday toy drive.

EPA's New Mandatory Reporting Requirements For Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Starting
on January 1, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will
require large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to collect greenhouse
gas (GHG) emission data under a new reporting system. These large
emitters include fossil fuel suppliers and industrial gas suppliers,
direct greenhouse gas emitters and manufacturers of heavy duty and off
road vehicles and engines. It is expected that this mandatory reporting
requirement will cover approximately 85 percent of the nation's GHG
emissions and apply to approximately 10,000 facilities. Read More!
Chryso's Beauty Buys: Eco-Friendly Nail Polish
Welcome to my beauty column! We will devote this space to a new product category for the month, be it body wash, nail polish, or bath salts. We'll let you know which brand outshines the other in the categories of safety, environmental responsiveness, packaging, practicality, and results so that you can make informed choices about what you slather on, dust on, and lather up with. This month, we take on nail polish.
When
I was a tween, painting my nails was a Friday-night ritual. I'd pull
out my square Lucite case, which held all my supplies-a cuticle pusher,
a nail file, a buffer and toe separators (for my pedicure) and loads of
little hot pink, orange, purple, even blue bottles. I'd paint away on
my bed, on the floor, at the kitchen table.
Fun for me. Not for
mom. "Woo! It smells in here!" she'd say. Then she'd open the front
door and wave it back and forth like a fan. "You know, that smell's no
good for you. You're breathing that in." Read More!

The Biggest Ever "What to Do With Your Stuff" Page
In honor of America Recycles Day,
I am attempting to pull together a huge list of "What to do with your
stuff." There are many good resources for different types of recycling
and freecycling out there, but I often find that I need to go to
several different websites depending on the type of stuff I need to
dispose of. So I decided to make a list of all the different ways to
get rid of the things you no longer need while making sure those things
get reused, recycled, or disposed of in a proper manner. I hope you
will add to this list so it will be a wonderful resource for all. Here we go, let's start with the obvious, stuff that is collected by "curbside recycling" in your municipality: Plastic Bottles, Glass Bottles, Aluminum Cans, Paper
(Newspaper, Magazines, Printer Paper, Cereal Boxes, Cardboard, etc),
Aluminum Containers, and some other plastic containers and aluminum and steel items. Earth911.com has a great tool to lookup what can be recycled in your neck of the woods.Read More!
Dede's Green Scene: The Broadway Green Alliance
Start
spreading the news - Broadway is going green! The Broadway Green
Alliance (BGA), in collaboration with the National Resource Defense
Council (NRDC) and support from the Mayor's Office of Long Term
Sustainability, is working with theaters to modify their practices to
reduce their environmental impact and carbon footprint. The BGA
launched in 2008 and consists of six committees that manage different
aspects of the venture. Since its inception, theaters have switched
their marquee lights to more energy efficient light bulbs, recycled
items from closed shows, washed costumes with eco-friendly detergent in
cold water, and switched to rechargeable batteries whenever possible.
When shows go on tour, they offset the impact by investing money in
renewable energy.
Audiences
also may have noticed a greener "Wicked" and not just with Elphaba's
makeup. "Wicked" was one of the first shows to adapt greener practices
after David Stone, producer of "Wicked", saw "An Inconvenient Truth."
"I decided that night to challenge all of the companies of Wicked
across North America to take a stand and protect our planet. I urge
every show, theater, union, and vendor to support Broadway's commitment
to this very important plan to reduce individual consumption as well as
the industry's collective footprint." Read More!
