June/July 2009 Newsletter
Greetings!

Happy Summer!  The weather here in NYC had been downright dreadful up until last week.  My uncle Mario, visiting from Italy for ten days, was wondering if the sun ever came out in the U.S.
Well the sun is out and it's time to go to the beach!

As we head into the 4th of July weekend, you may be thinking about hot dogs on the grill, bug spray, sunscreen and swimming in the ocean.  We have articles on EcoPlum covering these topics and the related health and environmental impacts.   We have also reprinted 2 of these articles in this issue along with some breaking news from the EPA and a very creative tip for your summer garden from Michael.

This has been a phenomenal month for us on Twitter, as reported by our new Social Media Intern Dede below.  If you are not following us, you are missing out on a lot of action!   We also continue to get a lot of positive feedback on the EcoPlum Pledge and encourage you to take it if you have not done so already.

This month, we are proud to add ReusableBags.com as a retail partner.  We are also still running our special with AdessoHome.com so please check them both out!

By the way, we now have all previous issues of this newsletter available to you in our EcoPlum Pie Archive (in case you just joined us and are dying to see what we had to say in prior months).

Oh, and if you happen to be in New York City on July 15th, a bunch of us at EcoPlum are going to Green Drinks NYC.  Come join us!

Thanks and have a wonderful, safe and fun Independence Day!

Best,

Organic Hot Dogs

It's summertime, and for meat eaters, that means one glorious thing-barbeque season! Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs, or 818 hot dogs every second, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

I like-no I love-to slather my dog with mustard and top it with sauerkraut. But like many other health-conscious individuals, I cringe when I consider what I'm ingesting. Conventional hot dogs are usually stuffed with pork or beef, salt, garlic, paprika, and preservatives called nitrites and nitrates

Alternatives to Synthetic, Toxic Bug Repellent

Insects share the biosphere with us; but, like many a close neighbor, they can be pests. The use of synthetic chemicals are bad for everything in the biosphere, including us; but is there an alternative to synthetic, toxic, bug repellents? Is there a natural way to keep insects at enough distance that we can appreciate them as more than pests? Yes, there is.

Industrial-synthetic bug repellents contain powerful chemicals and concentrations thereof, which we are not exposed to in nature. "DEET" is the most prevalent example. Read More

Use Fish Aquarium as Fertilizer

Here is an original tip from Michael here at Ecoplum.

Do you have a fish aquarium? Well, next time you change the water don't pour it down the drain. Try using it as fertilizer for you plants or garden. Michael has been using this helpful trick for years and he has seen excellent results. People ask him out he gets his plants looking so vibrant and lush. Use animal waste without being wasteful.Read More

EPA Grants California Waiver Request

California's waiver request enabling the state to enforce its greenhouse gas emissions standards for new motor vehicles, beginning with the current model year has recently been granted by EPA. California's initial waiver request was made in December 2005 and was denied in March 2008. According to EPA at that time, the denial was based on an interpretation of the Clean Air Act finding that California did not have a need for its greenhouse gas emission standards to meet "compelling and extraordinary conditions." Meet our team members...this month...Benjamin!

Benjamin J. Bliumis is an environmental freelance writer from New York. With a background in art, media communications, philosophy, and ecology, Mr. Bliumis writes to affect environmental awareness.

Benjamin Bliumis focuses on inter-cultural communication, a discipline that is grounded in anthropology.  Inter-cultural communication utilizes media to resonate with 'target cultures.'  It differs from conventional advertising in that it rests on the power of public education, heightened awareness, and logic.  Inter-cultural communications tarries with consumer demand to consider overall social well-being.

Mr. Bliumis is currently writing a book that uses Kantian philosophy as a grounding for discourse over environmental imperatives. A journey through mathematical proofs, meta-mathematics, philosophical doctrine, literature and anthropology, this book eventually surfaces in the modern day context of environmental crisis.

After a recent six-month Research and Writing Fellowship with Greenpeace USA, Benjamin Bliumis is currently farming organically in Maui, Hawaii.  He will continue to write for EcoPlum and on other projects and in the fall he will attend graduate school at New York University to pursue a master's thesis on environmental imperatives.
