May 2009 Newsletter
Greetings!

Wow! May just FLEW by! We're getting the newsletter out a little late this month, there is just so much going on!  This is such a great time of year - end of school, graduations, summer kickoff celebrations, and of course spring cleaning.

I don't know about you, but I have three very special people in my life graduating this spring:  my son Noah is graduating from elementary school, my daughter Talia is graduating from kindergarten, and our loving caregiver Dreselle just graduated from Hunter College!  Congratulations to all the graduates out there!

So if you are planning to honor the graduates in your life, check out Yuka's article about greening graduation parties and Chryso's article about some natural ways to clean up after the party!  Yes, Mom, you always knew best about the baking soda, lemon and vinegar!

Is your graduate moving into a new home?  Take advantage of EcoPlum partner Adessohome.com's special discount for EcoPlum members in our special offers section below.

We also wanted to share some of the results from last month's EcoPlum Survey and Pledge for Earth Day.  Thanks to all the participants!  We've decided to extend the EcoPlum Pledge beyond Earth Day and incorporate it into our EcoPlum Academy program.  Take it now for a FREE EcoPlum ChicoBag!

Oh, and if you happen to be in New York City on June 9th, a bunch of us at EcoPlum are going to Green Drinks NYC.  Come join us!

Thanks again for your time, and for caring.

Best,

6 Cheap or Free Ways to Green Up Your Graduation Party

After late nights studying, tons of finals and four years of gym class, grads deserve a celebration in true grand style to congratulate them on their achievements. Sure, there is food to order, decorations to hang, and plates and utensils to prepare, but a summer shindig need not be wasteful. Here are some very easy ways to green up your grad's soiree - without breaking the bank.

1. This may be a no-brainer for many, but sending Evites or Facebook invitations in lieu of traditional paper ones is cheaper, less wasteful and more hassle-free. Love the beautiful looks of paper invitations? Try Paperless Post, which sends your guests an electronic "envelope" they can open with a click, revealing a pretty card.

Spring Cleaning - Au Naturale

Dangerous bleach, ammonia, and alcohol make up most household cleaning products. For options that don't leave a chemical residue, stay away from store-bought concoctions and go au naturale. You've probably got these simple products in your kitchen already: baking soda, vinegar, lemon, club soda and cornstarch. As an extra bonus, these cleaning agents are often more affordable than store-bought brands. Follow these hints and you'll feel safe enough to eat off the floor-literally. Read More

President Obama Announces a New Policy for the Auto Industry

On May 19, 2009, President Obama announced a new national policy aimed at both increasing fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas pollution for all new cars and trucks sold in the United States. This new policy will create fuel efficiency standards for model years 2012-2016, requiring an average fuel economy standard of 35.5 mpg in 2016. These standards are projected to save 1.8 billion barrels of oil and to reduce approximately 900 million metric tons in greenhouse gas emissions. These aggressive goals will surpass the CAFE law passed by Congress in 2007 which required an average fuel economy of 35 mpg in 2020. Read More

Meet our team members...this month...Brianna!

Meet Brianna Marquart. Brianna is one of our awesome writers. Here is a little about her...
Brianna is from Hudson, Wisconsin. She joined the Ecoplum team because her roommate suggested it and she thought, "why not?!" The best word to describe Brianna is meticulous. She loves being one step ahead and getting things done before people even think of it. Her interests are running with her dog (on trails especially), reading, watching movies and spending time with friends and family.  She wants people to know that she likes the smell of fresh cut grass, her favorite pop is Squirt and she loves Wong's Cafe chow mein. When she is not updating her food blog, Brianna is working in her yard and riding her motorcycle. Her dream job is to be a travel writer/host. Her heroes are her parents. Brianna is currently a restaurant manager at Bonfire Restaurant in Minnesota. She loves the midwest and enjoys living in St. Paul.
