What's New at www.ecoplum.com January 2009 Newsletter
|
Greetings!
Happy New Year! Again, thank you for joining our community!
Along with the New Year come resolutions. Some of you may have made resolutions to take better care of the environment in 2009. I have to admit, it is not always easy being green. But when you think about your contribution to reducing waste, curbing greenhouse gases, and protecting endangered species, then the effort is definitely worth it.
This issue of EcoPlum Pie is dedicated to helping you keep your New Year's resolutions to be greener. Hope you find it helpful.
Best,
Gia Machlin

How do I keep my New Year's resolution to be more environmentally conscious?
GET EDUCATED Did you know about the
federal law called the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know
Act (EPCRA) that gives you the right to know about toxic chemicals being
released into the environment? I didn't. I've also learned about what the effect of plastic bags is on sea animals. The information can at times be overwhelming, confusing, and even inconclusive. But just by knowing more, I am apt to be more conscious about my daily actions, resulting in better health for me, my family and the environment. Learn more at The Orchard. JOIN A COMMUNITY Sharing ideas about what has worked or not worked, what is easy to do and what takes much more perseverance, and just hearing stories from like minded people struggling with the same issues can be extremely helpful. See what people are saying on Facebook and Twitter and about our tips, videos, articles and products in EcoVotz.
START NEW HABITS Take your reusable coffee mug with you every day. I never (ok, rarely) leave home without it. Carry 1 or 2 foldable shopping bags in your purse, briefcase, gym bag, man bag or whatever
you carry around daily. Keep a bunch in your car. (Remember to fold them up and put them back in your bag/car after you unpack the groceries). Keep a reusable water bottle in your gym bag and in your kids' snack bags. Most places have water fountains or tap water if you forget to fill it before you leave home. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth. Turn the lights off when you leave a room. Turn your computer off at night. These are all no brainers. For more creative ideas, check out EcoTipz. |
Meet our team members...this month...Ann Marie!
Meet Ann Marie. Ann Marie is our phenomenal Editorial Intern working from Marrakesh right now! She has made significant contributions to the site - thanks Ann Marie! Here is a little bit about her... Ann Marie Rubin grew up surrounded by central Virginia's beautiful
countryside, which helped to foster her lifelong devotion to the environment.
After graduating from the University of Virginia in May 2005, she moved to New
York City and split her time between a job in marketing and co-founding an
environmental fundraising and advocacy organization called Eco-Patriots. Working
with the Clean Air Conservancy,
Eco-Patriots successfully completed their first project in 2007, an outreach
campaign that sent a team of cyclists 4000 miles across the country, raising
enough money to retire over 2000 metric tons of carbon dioxide--- the equivalent
to the annual emissions of 5000 cars--- on the Chicago Climate Exchange. After this
project, Ann Marie joined the editorial staff of EcoPlum and also began
working at the Stone Barns Center for Food &
Agriculture, an innovative organic farm and education center. Next year she
plans to study environmental law to better arm herself for facilitating a
revolution in the grotesquely unsustainable food systems in our country.
Meanwhile, she is living and teaching in Morocco, trying to cope with the
nonexistent cognizance of environmental accountability, and nevertheless,
enjoying life in Africa.
