The past six weeks I have had my parents with me.  They are in their early 80's, and for the last eight years I have flown them to New Mexico to get them out of the snowy winters of northeastern Ohio.  A week after they arrived, my Dad's health took a downward turn.  He ended up in the hospital, three weeks in a skilled nursing center, and then two weeks in my home, until I was finally able to fly them back to the rest of our family four days ago.  I share this with you only because of the thoughts I  have had while going through this experience.

Choose Respect on National R-Word Day

 Jena and Marla

March 7, 2012 is the National Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign day. It is time to dissolve the dehumanizing use of the word "retarded" in every day speech and language.

In 2012 President Obama signed Rosa's Law, this law changed the word Mental Retardation to Intellectual Disabilities in Federal Statutes. This is a hug step in gaining equality for people with Intellectual Disabilities.

Through the Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign we are turning that step into a leap. Our very own Program Operations Manager and Miss New Mexico Plus America 2012 Jena Richardson, Rio Rancho Rockets athlete Marla Gavurnik, and our intern Erin Gallegos recently created their own R-Word PSA, click HERE to check it out. We here at SONM have made the pledge, now it's your turn.

Visit www.R-word.org to make the pledge. Make the choice today and every day to choose respect.
