Over 170 athletes compete at 3rd annual Mayor's Indoor Track Invitational
By Erin Gallegos On February 18th, over 170 athletes from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Belen/Las Lunas, Gallup, and Las Cruces participated in the 2012 Mayor's Indoor Track Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Dozens of volunteers from the UNM Football team, Bank of America, and Cleveland High School helped out at the event and posed for pictures with the athletes. As an added bonus Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry shared a few words to our families at the opening ceremonies--offering them words of encouragement and praise for their courage and dedication in sport. SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella shared his sentiments and added a few words of her own. "To give Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to run on one of the finest indoor tracks in our country is awesome at a lot of levels," said Mascorella. "There is a lot to be said about the Mayor's Invitational, but the thing that stands out in my mind is the quality of this day. Lobo Football, Bank of Albuquerque, City Parks and Recreation, and the Mayor and his family have joined together to showcase the fact that our Special Olympics athletes and their families are valued. There's chemistry about this event that sends everyone home feeling glad they were there."

New Mexico Law Enforcement Torch kicks off 2012 campaign
Several dozen members of our New Mexico Law Enforcement Torch Run (NMLETR) gathered today at the Wells Fargo building in downtown Albuquerque to ignite the collective efforts of another statewide and year-round awareness and fund-raising campaign for Special Olympics New Mexico. The Kick-Off featured two Training and Development presentations, as well as comments from LETR executive committee member and SONM athlete Ryan Hanson, SONM parent James Raes and Wells Fargo Senior Vice President Bruce Beebe. Wells Fargo also presented a check to the NMLETR for $15,000. "This year's LETR Kick-Off will not only honor our law enforcement officers for their commitment to Special Olympics athletes--representing 108 New Mexico communities--but this event will deliver a strong message that Special Olympics New Mexico has committed to placing resources in our law enforcement community through training and development," said SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella. " We are rebuilding, reloading, and celebrating what will strategically take place over the next three years. This is a very exciting time as we build new leaders in law enforcement to further our Torch Run."
