Thoughts From Randy - Blog
Our Neighbors Our Friends Two weeks ago a multitude of New M exico's Law Enforcement Officers and Cadets partnered with seven Applebee's in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho to raise money for Special Olympics by doing a Tip-A-Cop. The long and short of this Law Enforcement Torch Run event is that officers serve as "celebrity waiters" and donate all their tips to Special Olympics. They refill glasses, sing songs, do push-ups - and for the average Joe simply walking in to get something to eat - the night can turn out to be quite entertaining and a lot of fun.

Successes all around for 2011 Coach of the Year
By Erin Gallegos

Linda Charzuk is the local program coordinator for the SONM's Albuquerque Gymnastics School (AGS) delegation and is the SONM Coach of the Year for 2011. When asked what makes her a successful Special Olympics coach she says, "I am not just a coach, but a friend."
Linda was named Coach of the Year in August of 2011 at the Four Corners Invitational. As a coach for the AGS delegation, she coaches gymnastics, bowling, and bocce. Her delegation has between 50 and 75 athletes and most of the athletes play more then one sport.
When asked about her coaching style, Linda says that she is not a "hard-nosed" coach, but likes to inspire athletes through positive feedback. Because she coaches three very different sports, she adjusts her coaching style for each sport.
"I have to be more hands-on when coaching gymnastics," Linda says, "but when I coach bocce, I usually just organize the athletes."

Applebee's Tip-A-Cop event raises more than $10,000Event provides law enforcement officers a chance to give back, impact public attitude On Thursday, January 26th dozens of Law Enforcement Torch Run officers from Albuquerque and Rio Rancho exchanged badges for aprons for the Applebee's Tip-A-Cop-an in-store fund raiser for Special Olympics that also helps spread awareness of the needs and capabilities of our athletes. The event involved all seven Albuquerque Applebee's locations and also one in Rio Rancho. Officers-and cadets-from both the Albuquerque Police Department and Rio Rancho Police Department greeted and served Applebee's patrons-ultimately raising a total of more than $10,000 for Special Olympics.
