Thoughts from Randy
At Our Core
For the past seven months a group of twenty people representing Special Olympics New Mexico have been working with representatives from the New Mexico Ethics Alliance to identify and define our organization’s Core Values. I have been looking forward to this process for a long time and am happy to share that with only one meeting to go - I believe our SONM “family” can feel proud of the work that has been done. It was not easy work – and there were times that stretched all of us, but those values we have selected fit us. They will hopefully serve as our cornerstone - forever. These values by the way include and represent our athletes, families, community and corporate partners, donors, volunteers, and staff. In case this subject is unfamiliar to you, our organizational core values are those values that represent our highest priorities and beliefs. They help guide our decisions, our conduct and behavior, and how we go about our work. Our values speak to others about the essence of who we are and what we represent. When I think about our athletes all across New Mexico I am reminded of the significance of this work.

Over 60 rappelers help raise more than $70,000 for 2011 Over The Edge
On Friday, September 23rd, some 62 Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) fans overcame the challenge of scaling down the side of a 16 story building in downtown Albuquerque for the 2011 Over The Edge New Mexico (OTENM) fund raiser presented by HUB International. OTENM is an exclusive fund raiser for SONM that involves a 230 ft. rappel down the side of the New Mexico Bank and Trust Building. Each registered participant was required to raise a minimum of $1,000 to participate. The event raised a total of $73,491. Since 2009, the event alone has raised nearly $190,000 to support SONM’s year-round, statewide sports program. “For me, rappelling was amazing way to relate to our athletes,” said SONM Executive Director Randy Mascorella. “Not often have I had to face a fear that literally escalated my heart rate and caused my knees to knock. Meeting that fear head-on and accomplishing the goal helped me understand what our Special Olympics athletes face every day and the importance of giving them opportunities to celebrate and talk about their accomplishments.” Special thanks to our 2011 Over The Edge for Special Olympics presenting sponsor HUB International, as well as these additional event sponsors: Comcast Spotlight, Clear Channel Outdoor, Rosemont Realty, Harnick Orthodontics, Young Agents, PNM, and Stone Age Climbing Gym.
United Blood Services and SONM partnership earns huge rewards
On Monday, October 3rd United Blood Services of New Mexico presented Special Olympics New Mexico with a donation of $5,410. The presentation culminated a partnership that brought 77 new blood donations from SONM families and fans using blood donation vans at our 2011 State Summer Games in Albuquerque and 2011 Four Corners Invitational in Farmington. In addition, during the entire month of August, walk-in blood donation to any UBS location meant an opportunity for SONM to earn more dollars. Total procedures in August were 5,025. According to UBS, in New Mexico we use 320 units of blood daily, while just one donation helps save the lives of three individuals. Thanks to SONM’s efforts during our 2011 State Summer Games and 2011 Four Corners Invitational, we helped save a total of 231 lives. Thank you for everyone who donated blood, either at our Games or as a walk-in at one of UBS’ locations during the month of August. Thanks to your help, SONM is not only improving lives, we are saving them.
