Thoughts from Randy-Blog
Awards

Probably like me, many of you have a box with “stuff” you have kept
from your past – personal treasures. We rarely open that box, but
consider every single thing in there meaningful. In my box, among
other things, there’s a girl scout badge, a softball trophy, and a
paper I wrote with an A+ written in red across the top. One of my
prized possessions is a certificate that I was given for serving as
captain of my basketball team. It has a special place in my heart
because my teammates were the ones who picked me.

State Golf, Softball, Aquatics and
Soccer is just
around the "Corner"

[Farmington, NM] On August 19-21 2011 over 1,000 Special Olympic
athletes, partners and coaches will return to Farmington, NM for the
2011 Four Corners Invitational presented by ConocoPhillips.
Representatives from 23 delegations will compete in Golf, Softball,
Aquatics and Soccer.
After our inaugural soccer season in 2010 we are excited to see a
new sport in Special Olympics New Mexico begin to take shape. After
a soccer clinic held with UNM Men’s soccer team the enthusiasm that
surrounds this sport is contagious. Special Olympics New Mexico
Executive Director Randy Mascorella is excited to see the sport of
soccer continue to grow and the athletes that are involved be raised
to a new level of athleticism.

“Soccer isn’t an easy sport and the physical endurance needed to
participate will affect every athlete involved,” says Mascorella. “I
am looking forward to seeing our athletes change and grow and not
only experience a new sport but experience a new dedicated athlete
within themselves.”
If you find yourself in the Farmington area from August 19 -21 join
us for a weekend filled with great competitions and a spirit that
will spread to everyone.
August is the official SONM month for
United
Blood Services donations. Donate today or at the FCI!

Consider this: according to the United Blood Services (UBS), the
impact of offering a minimum of one donation can in effect save
three human lives. Also, one in three people will need a blood
transfusion.
Earlier this year, you may have noticed a mobile UBS donation unit
at our State Summer Games, and you may have even donated blood. If
you did--thank you! Your generosity helped our Summer Games
not only improve lives, but save them.
That is why
SONM and UBS are partnering again, all month long and
statewide--including at our 2011 Four Corners Invitational presented
by ConocoPhillps. Donate blood at any UBS location across the
state and each donation will provide $1 back to Special Olympics.
Appointments and walk-ins are available for supporters who choose to
donate directly at UBS locations.
If you're planning to attend our Four Corners Invitational in
Farmington, a portable blood donation unit will be located in
Olympic Village near our Softball and Aquatics venue on Saturday,
August 20th.
The goal is to have 40 people donate blood. SONM will provide
t-shirt giveaways for donors at the FCI event. Pre-Four
Corners Invitational blood-drives registration is required and
available online at UnitedBloodServices.org.

SONM Las Vegas delegation leads local 4th of July
Parade

[Las Vegas, NM] On July 4, 2011 the Special Olympics New Mexico Las
Vegas delegation loaded into a trailer covered in American flags,
along with red, white and blue colored balloons, colorful paper
flowers and a sign that read, “2011 4th of July Fiestas Grad
Marshall’s.”
Mayor Alfonso E. Ortiz Jr. recognized Area 2's SO Las Vegas
delegation in a certificate of recognition:
“The essence of life is not embodied by physical or mental
perfection, but it is an integral part of the human spirit and
striving for one’s own personal goals is a right of life which must
be protected. The development of human potential is the commitment
we must make to guarantee the brightest possible tomorrow for our
future generation.”
It's with great pride the Las Vegas delegation took the lead in the
4th of July Fiesta Parade, showing every person in attendance the
joy and human spirit that is shared throughout SONM. Congratulations
Las Vegas for reaching your goals and being ambassadors of the
Special Olympics mission.
