Thoughts from Randy A Small Happiness
I just finished a book entitled “The Beautiful Girl” written by Rachel Simon. It is a story about a young girl with an intellectual disability, who spends a good portion of her life institutionalized. Although the book is classified as fiction it is more real than not. The author does an excellent job of developing the characters, all who share their own pearls of wisdom along the way – the kind that tend to stay with you. One that has been rolling around in my brain the past few days is “a small happiness can make a big sadness less sad.” The painful truth of the matter is that there are many, many people living with a developmental disability who have had and continue to experience big sadness's in their lives. These sadness's aren’t obvious to most of us because when terrible things occur, this population is not usually capable of defending themselves or even knowing how or where to go for help. Their sadness's too often remain hidden, and their terrible stories go untold.

Take our Special Olympics Family Survey and help Special Olympics grow A message from Special Olympics, International: We would like to offer you an opportunity to take part in an exciting research project about Special Olympics and families. Researchers at the Center for Social Development and Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston have been partnering with Special Olympics International for over 10 years to help evaluate Special Olympics programming and explore its impact on athletes, families, and communities across the US and around the world. This survey will help Special Olympics learn more about the families who are involved in its programs across the country so that it can better meet their needs. It can also benefit other families of children and youth with special needs by documenting the many ways that they are thriving, as well as the challenges that they may face. We ask that only one parent or guardian per household complete the survey. As a thank you for your participation, you will have the opportunity to win $100 gift card. If you have any questions or concerns about this research, you may contact the project director, Dr. Joanne Kersh, toll-free at 1-888-289-3060 or by email at joanne.kersh@umb.edu. Please click HERE to take the survey.
Special Olympic Athletes and Coaches Area 5 Golf Tournament Rescheduled
We will now be hosting the Area 5 Golf Tournament on Thursday, July 21st, I know this last minute change is a tremendous inconvenience for all of you and it will cause problems with athletes, partners, and coaches who have to take additional time off from work. Desert Greens is extremely apologetic and really does not have an explanation for the mix up. We appreciate your understanding but if you feel the need to discuss this, please feel free to contact Chris Page at 505-856-0342. Also, with less than two days left, your assistance with getting the word out will be vital so please pass this information on to all your athletes and partners. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday July 21st, 2011 at Desert Greens Golf Course.
